New ADSL packages: how do they compare?

I had a Telkom ADSL line until I moved into a complex with no telephone lines. :p
My first choice in the new complex was also Telkom, after waiting 6 weeks they arrived to install only to realize that there were no lines.

As an on-line gamer it's sad to say that no matter how terrible we would like to say Telkom is, ADSL is still the best option and most predictable in terms of stability... it was a REAL episode trying to find an alternative.

Not a very bright comment there bud. In case you have not noticed, Telkom happens to be the only provider of ADSL in the countrty, i.e. fixed line. Why fixed line so important? Well I think those points have been covered to death in this forum. Please start thinking outside the box, wireless is NOT a solution for all. A "cut your nose off to spite your face" attitude is pointless and will get us nowhere, and Telkoms knows this too bloody well.
 
Just all remember with regards to Neotel information.

You might connect at 2.4 but if you get 100KB/s - you're lucky! expect speeds of 20 - 50 average.

My only disappointment is with NoTel, the love of money was too powerful for their conscience.:sick:
 
So, is that it? What about the article yesterday saying that Telkom would be making an announcement today and all the speculation in the article that the entry level speed will now be 1Mbps? I get a price increase and a 2 GB addition to my cap? I am so exited, I think I am going strip naked, put on a party hat and run up and down the main road screaming Telkom's praises. I think NOT!!!

One comment regarding the price comparison table:

An additional column should be added next to "Speed (Mbps)" reflecting the average connection speeds established by customers. 3.1Mbs on NeoFlex or 3.6Mbs on Vodacom HSDPA for example are fairly tale speeds for most if not all users.

LOL... only in South Africa would you find wireless providers coming in cheaper than the fixed line provider. It is only when you go out of bundle that ADSL becomes more feasible.

This is often asked for - but where can I get accurate statistics about average throughput speeds?

Set up a speed test link and ask us to participate over a set number of days/ parameters. If it is not too difficult ;) , I'm sure you will have quite a number of users willing to provide feedback.
 
I DEMAND UNCAPPED LOCAL-ONLY.

It's time to get rid of these ludicrous local bandwidth costs so that hosting local content stops being a royal ripoff.

Why are Telkom still charging per GB for infrastructure costs that are calculated at GB/s?

How accurate is that?

People complain about iBurst here all the time, yet I get 1Mb/sec speeds almost 100% of the time. Last night I downloaded a file on RS free at 115KB/sec - it was over a 100MB download and the total speed was 115KB/sec.

Maybe Neotel also has such speed but some people are just unlucky to live in a congested area.

So, I went to : http://www.telkom.co.za/common/pricelist/prices/local/DoBroadband.HTML to get the discount that DO FASTEST provides.
Discount = R118.

Then I went to http://www.telkom.co.za/common/pricelist/prices/local/adsl.html to get the price of the FASTEST ADSL line rental.
Price = R413.

Then I went to http://www.telkom.co.za/common/pricelist/prices/local/monthly_rental.html to get the COMPULSORY price of the telephone line rental.
Price = 124.20
You have to pay R124.20 for the telkom copper telephone line in addition to the R554.

So, DO 4MB package = 124.20 + 413 - 118 = 419.20

Now ... add the internet access from Telkom ISP [ http://www.telkom.co.za/common/pricelist/prices/local/telkomInternet.html ]
= R239 for 3GB == R419.20 + R239.00 = R658.20 4MBDSL 3GB Package with DO discount applied.
or
= R149 for 2GB == R419.20 + R149.00 = R568.20 4MBDSL 2GB Package with DO discount applied.
or
= R79 for 1GB == R419.20 + R79.00 = R498.20 4MBDSL 1GB Package with DO discount applied.

And, I got different figures form the article, but I have not applied the price changes.
But, that is how Telkom works out their DO package.

This doesn't make sense, if this only applies to 2 & 3GB caps.. does that mean my 4GB cap will be more than a 5GB cap?

R239 for 3GB. R259 is for "Advanced", whatever that may be.

For entry level surf and email "broadband", Telkom's ADSL does not compare well. There are just too many fixed costs.

But of course, the soft cap, the free local, the reliability, the freedom to add on a myriad of other ISP offerings, are the reasons why ADSL still leaves the competition choking on its dust.

I would be delighted to leave Telkom for another provider, but what real alternative is there in SA for anyone who wants the full internet experience?

There are many players in the market, but there is still no real competition.

You [-]can[/-] have to get your line from Telkom, but by supporting Telkom as an ISP, you're sending a clear signal to them that the job they are doing is A-ok.

The majority of people are using Telkom's Do-1 package, it's such a popular package, why change (read: drop prices) it?

I'm living in Midrand, Vorna Valley and got exactly that... 100k was the maximum I managed to achieve with supposed good signal strength. When attempting to get a hold of support to try and sort out the issue I realized that the customer service was non-existent.

Hence, I canned Neotel... :cool:

Am I wrong in my calculations that telkom is currently the "cheapest" ISP?

What I currently get on a DO3 account (3GB)
4.5 GB blended
30 GB local

DO3 = R 555
Line = R 124
Tot = R 679

Anyone know of a better deal?
