New ipad and tethering

So I sit corrected. 8ta do have a carrier bundle for the iPad. They only people who don't is Cell C.

I had a dig around in the XML file located here: http://itunes.apple.com/version and found the following carrier bundles:

Vodacom
http://appldnld.apple.com/iPhone/CarrierBundles/041-1384.20110603.B3vmR/Vodafone_za_iPhone.ipcc
http://appldnld.apple.com/iPhone/CarrierBundles/041-2974.20111104.UKiu5/Vodafone_za_iPad.ipcc

CellC
http://appldnld.apple.com/iOS5/CarrierBundles/041-0905.20120608.64ftg/CellC_za_iPhone.ipcc

8ta
http://appldnld.apple.com/iOS5/CarrierBundles/041-4432.20120307.etu4r/8ta_za_iPad.ipcc

MTN
http://appldnld.apple.com/iPhone/CarrierBundles/041-3827.20120120.JmcY3/MTN_za_iPhone.ipcc
http://appldnld.apple.com/iPhone/CarrierBundles/041-0623.20110408.Lnsd2/MTN_za_iPad.ipcc

So I'll amend my statement that 8ta don't have an agreement with Apple for the iPhone. It seems things are slightly different for the iPad? Again unless either Apple or the mobile providers speak up, we can't do much more than speculate.

Thanks. Did you read the link i pasted in this tread. They are saying it is the carrier that needs to fix it?

I did but it's meaningless given that neither Apple nor the Mobile Providers are parting with any details on how the process works. There might well be a mountain of paperwork to complete, 100 meeljon dollars paid and 6 months wait before Apple makes the change or it could be as simple as filling in an on-line form and waiting a few days.

If you are such an expert on the Apple and Mobile Provider relationship

I'm the one who posted the link that Beri is pasting everywhere, that explains the process. You don't understand things either, and neither does Jannie. If you set the carrier to allow hotspot, it allows it.

There were other service providers in EU and Aus that enabled the hotspot on the new iPad in less than a week after their customers complained when the device launched, so it is carrier driven. Like I said, our carriers probably do not qualify to enable this, and blame Apple since it's the easy South African way out.

No it doesn't. It explains what someone who has no affiliation with Apple or a mobile provider believes is the process.

I know the carrier profile needs to be updated and I know from the reports for the MTN people that the updated MTN carrier bundle actually locks it. So yes it's all about what is inside the carrier bundle.

I'll take Jannie's knowledge of the process over yours, if you don't mind and he's isn't really dropping any detail (all due to Apple NDA).

Again, how do you know our carriers don't qualify for hotspot? It's working on the iPhone, why not the iPad? You also don't know how long in advance carriers were asked or if everyone was asked, or if they only had a chance after the device launch to update their profiles.

All you can say is: "provider X has it, why not us?" without the answer to that it's impossible to lay the blame at any single entity.

And here I thought we were actually having an interesting technical discussion....

Go read, Vodafone Ireland. Question asked 24 April and carrier update waiting for Apple to push down on the 09 May, I don't know the exact date when it came through but they advertise it on their website as a feature so it did go through - http://deviceguides.vodafone.ie/web...connecting-device-and-computer/use-tethering/

Like I said before, this is not rocket science.

Again, please take Jannie's advise with magical unicorn dust. The Vodafone guys are very open, and carrier settings are viewable on any computer. There is nothing NDA about them or the Apple process.

Looking at the carrier files on the Apple site and limited follow-up posts in that thread it looks like their update only went out with the final iOS 6 release which was 18/19 September. So it still took 4 months to do.

I agree it's not rocket science, I just want to know who is delaying the update process? If my deductions given the limited follow-up posts in that thread are correct then it took Apple 4 Months to process the carrier update. Surely they could have released it earlier as a standalone update?

Telstra does not have tethering 16 March

http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/1914830

Telstra has tethering on 11 May.

It doesn't take months, 2-4 weeks at most. On iPad so can't comment on the ipecac files on the Apple site, but I am sure Vodafone probably took the same time to get theirs out.

Nice find, still took 2 months though. At least this proves it can be done relatively quickly if the mobile provider does their bit.

This tread has been going for 2 months. Did not look at the other ones but i am sure i was not the first to ask about it. So we must be close or over the 3 months already...... Come on vodacom do something......or explain why this cannot be done with facts and prove that they are trying

Disclaimer: This is a pretty trivial process, but be sure to make a backup of your iPad before you start. I won't take resposibility for problems you encounter.

How it works: Essentially this is an iPhone carrier bundle for Vodacom (which has hotspot turned on) with a modified version number which we manually update onto the iPad (pretty simple fix if you think about it!). This only works for iPad 3rd Generation (aka iPad 3 aka the new iPad).

This currently works for Vodacom users. I should be able to make this work for MTN as well. I'm waiting for feedback in this thread so I can roll the correct version into a bundle. Cell C is already working without any fixes. Unfortunately I can't fix this for 8ta because they don't have any iPhone bundles.

Vodacom:
iOS 6: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/33168480/carrierbundles/Vodafone_za_13.0.1.ipcc
iOS 5.1.1: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/33168480/carrierbundles/Vodafone_za_12.0.1.ipcc

Installation:
For both Mac OS X and Windows, make sure iTunes is closed before proceeding.
For Mac OS X; open up Terminal.app and paste in the following
defaults write com.apple.itunes carrier-testing -bool true

For Windows, open up Run (Winkey+R) and paste the following;
“%ProgramFiles%\iTunes\iTunes.exe” /setPrefInt carrier-testing 1

If you’re running Windows x64 bit, do this instead:
"C:\Program Files (x86)\iTunes\iTunes.exe" /setPrefInt carrier-testing 1

Tip for Windows users: Rather open a cmd prompt and paste the above command in to see if it completes without error. Using the run box you won't see if it fails.

Connect your iPad, open up iTunes, select your iPad from the sidebar, and hold down option (Windows users, hold down Shift instead) while you click on update. An explorer box will pop up. Select iPhone/iPad Carrier Configuration Files in the drop down and browse to the .ipcc file you wish to load.

Check Settings > General > About. Carrier should be 12.0.1 or 13.0.1

Go to Settings > Cellular Data > Personal Hotspot and toggle it to On. If it does not appear try a reboot and check again.

Well done @morkhans. I can confirm that these instructions worked perfectly for me using OSX 10.8.2, iTunes 10.7, iOS6. Now have personal hotspot working with Vodacom sim. Haven't noticed any side effects yet.
