How the actual fark can they justify they just spending money like this?

The Parties, the street/city names and now the money (so much as to mock us about it?), all irresponsible ways to piss money against the wall and sip on cognac.

What is the actual point of building RDP housing? Government education? Government controlled infrastructure? Clearly these are not actions of people that care.

That's 2.5m rand that could have bought people homes, or given kids books, or fixed a few holes plaguing the roads. All would be investments for the better.

the money wouldve been spent with or without Mandela
they change it every few years as has been pointed out already....

I have no problem with this.

Bank notes have to be changed.

He is an internationally recognised figure

As far as I am concerned he represents us all, above representing the ANC. You could say he is a nuetral person and loved by a lot more than just the ANC. He has make me look at myself and my previous attitudes towards others in life.

Many countries around the world have faces of leaders etc on thier banknotes, this is nothing that we have just dreamt up to suit the ANC.

The big five will still be there on the reverse. I think it is all very fitting.
I think most foreigners will think of Mandela and our wild animals if you asked them to name the first 2 things about South Africa that come to mind.

I am not a fan of the ANC, but I don't think there is anything wrong with this. Sometimes we just want to bash the ANC no matter what they do.

but can be NO politician? ok?

why not change "Republic of South Africa" to "Republic of Mandela" ? cool enough? huh?

I wouldn't change the name of the country to Republic of Mandela, I would change it to Republic of Mzansi or just Mzansi. That's just me!

I'm just glad they kept the big five on the other side...

but we seriously need more influential people in South Africa; Nelson Mandela... on ALL FIVE notes!

The ANC is choosing to politicize the currency to detract from their dismay records on performance and corruption. Next will be a renaming of the currency to something more "African".

Bet you its gonna be Moolah, you know something close to pula ;)

So when the poor masses finally get their hands on a few bank notes and then see how little it gets them they'll see Mandela's face :erm:

They can pay homage. Thank you tata

While I think the idea of having Madiba on our notes is fantastic, could they not have changed the pose or the atwork instead of just the colour.
Looks pretty bland to be honest.

that or they'll just settle for South African Dollars.

After a lot of pondering, I decided to vote 1. BUT........I am still not 100% sure I like the idea that Mandela is affiliated with the ANC. As many have said...it gives our currency a political affiliation which I do not like.

Maybe De Klerk should be on the R10.00 and R20.00 notes and Mandela on the rest....he did after all also play a big role in setting the whole transition into motion did he not? Just thinking out loud.

R500 note? Hello inflation, nice to see you are rearing your ugly head.

How quickly we forget what? That JVR was on all the old notes? That is was offensive to some and therefore neutral images of our famous Big 5 animals were chosen instead?
Why would a picture of Nelson Mandela offend anyone?

Remeber these?

Old SA bank notes

How quickly we forget

There's a big difference between using the face of a long-dead man who FOUNDED THE NATION, as opposed to a man still living who is affiliated with the ruling party that happens to be printing the notes.

These "Mandela notes" are blatant propaganda by the ANC and yet another step towards a one-party state with its history textbooks rewritten to the tastes of that party. Particularly jarring to see the DA supporting this move, because it makes it completely obvious that instead of acting as a foil to ANC corruption, the DA is now happy to grab onto whatever they can in an attempt to win more votes. Pathetic.
