New MTN Supersonic FTTH pricing

Amazing. now on 12th July MTN have reverted their prices to the OLD pricing !!! Does the left hand know what the right hand is doing at MTN? Also on shop.mtn.co.za to recharge the notice is still up the Once-Off FTTH bundles are incorrect

https://www.mtn.co.za/everyday_serv...home/fibretothehome/Pages/MTN-supersonic.aspx
now shows :

The Mybroadband article clearly shows screenshots of the new prices, reduced installation fees at http://mybroadband.co.za/news/fibre/171595-mtn-slashes-fibre-prices-by-50.html

And the website to view data usage at https://m.mtn.co.za/mycontract/www/MTNApp/mobilewebapp/default/MTNApp.html does not allow a login.

A word of warning to anyone who only has MTN FTTH as an option: Do NOT sign a 24 month contract, and switch to another ISP as soon as MTN allow that.

They've updated their website with the new prices today. I also saw that the old prices were back yesterday.

I ordered and paid on the 1st of July. Site survey happened on the 6th of July and then the installation was completed on the 15th of July. Installation took about 3.5/4 hours to be completed but unfortunately the cable in the street hadn't been spliced correctly and the fibre was only activated at around 5:16 pm yesterday (20th of July)(with some encouragement from my side haha). Just make sure that the guy who does the site survey checks that the fibre is live at the boundary box so that you don't experience the same problem that I had. Speeds seem decent I'm getting about 47Mbps up and down with 5ms ping local speed test near the wifi router, this drops to about 33 Mbps up and down in my room upstairs on my Mac. International speeds are about 22Mbps down and 17Mbps up with a range of around 176ms ping to London.

Great thanks for all that.

Which router did they give you?
You using the 5Ghz band to get the ac spec speeds?
What area you in?

Looks like you got the 50Mbps line too?

I got the Huawei HG8245D ONT which works quite well for downloads but webpages seem to load at around the same speed as Adsl. Sometimes they load faster but sometimes there's a have a slight delay before loading. So I might look into other wifi alternatives when I get a chance.

I don't really use the 5Ghz band because the range is really weak where I normally am in my house. It also doesn't seem to make much of a difference for me.

I'm in Morninside.

Yes also went with the 50Mbps line because it was only R100 more than the 20Mbps line.

Do you get admin on the device or is it locked out like with some ISPs

Yes I got admin login and you can do most things, but not everything (e.g. can't add/modify VOIP).
I agree the 5 Ghz wifi is really weak, so I use 2.4 Ghz and extend it with an old Linksys WRT54G

Got connected this afternoon, very neat install done by ClearlineIS.

Got the ZTE F660 ONT/Router, bit disappointed considering when I ordered online it said it would be ZTE F680 with 5GHz and .ac spec. (have Apple .ac spec products)

How/where are you guys checking your data usage?

Thanks yeah figured that out.
You can also use the MyMTN mobile app but keep having to do the OTP thing is bit of a pain.

Hi,
I just wanted to ask the guys who have MTN fibre. I have paid for the month to month option online. I have now heard from the installer that I am supposed to organise the digging and the laying of the conduit myself, which I don't understand since MTN tell me that I don't need to do any digging myself. Has anyone else had an experience like this, whereby you were expected to do the digging and laying of conduit yourself? What was your experience like from payment?

The installers, clearlineIS did mine here in Cape Town, they did a few meters of minor trenching to house then maybe 30m of 20mm pvc piping via garage and along back of house to point.
Never paid extra

This is defiantly not the case. When I got my Mtn FTTH installed my installer Hugh (who did an excellent job) did everything . They can't expect you to lay your own conduit. Your installer is probably taking a chance.

Yeah I really don't understand the situation at all. The installer doesn't even seem to understand the situation, as when I called him last week, he told me that he has been told that every person interested in fibre in the area needs to sort out their own digging and laying of conduit, out of their own wallets. So there is some other company in the area going around quoting ridiculous amounts to dig and lay the conduit. So the whole situation seems very suspicious to me, I had contacted MTN previously about the situation and they told me that I don't need to do anything myself. So now after paying I am still hearing the same story, so I emailed MTN and they have just told me that they have forwarded the email to the relevant department. This was last week Wednesday and I have still not gotten a proper answer.

I would just do a hellopeter post that usually gets their attention haha. Alternatively go into an Mtn store and get them to log a complaint and ask for a reference number. Mtn's sales and billing department are useless but my Fibre line has been quite stable. At one point I was getting around 86 Mbps up and down locally on my 50 Mbps but now it's back to about 49 Mbps. Hopefully your problems get sorted out soon.
