new pc now or wait for new intel and amd??

My PC just died, think its the MB, but its a scoket 939 and no one seems to have those boards anymore.
Anyways ... I wanted ur opinions on whether to get a new PC now(i5-650/i7-870) or wait a month or so to get the i7-2600K/i5-2500K or wait even longer for the zambezi chips from amd?
bear in mind that I am without a Pc now and already suffering from withdrawal :)
 
I kinda sit with the same problem. My am2 board is also on his way out. (Overheating easily by the looks of it and creating stability issues).
The Sandy bridge intel's look like the best option for now IMO. Based on performance/budget that is. (given budget of R2.5k-R3k for mobo and cpu)

Do you know what is the timeframe for the new AMD chips?
If the release is in the next month or 2, I'll say to rather wait to see performance of the AMD, and perhaps cash-in on a pricewar between the two.
 
It is a tough wait, since you already have no PC
If you can wait until the AMD's are here, I would say wait, and see the differnce between price and performance.

If not, I see some online retailers are already showing the fixed, Ver3 P68 motheboards. And there is no argue that the 2600 and 2500 performs pretty well
 
When it comes to PC buying, no matter how long you wait, you will always regret not waiting one month longer for the next big thing. Buy it when you need it ;-)
 
Go for Sandy Bridge, since some online retailers already have Revision B3 (without the SATA2 problem that the B2 ones had) motherboards.

BullDozer will only be here like in June or July.
I'm not so sure that BullDozer would be as impressive, because 50% better than the current Phenom II is still rather poor compared to Sandy Bridge CPU's.

Yup, there's always something better on the horizon. You could wait for the price of the latest CPU's to drop, but there's usually a good reason for that, a new one has come out. There's pretty much never a good or bad time to buy a PC, just get it when you need it...
 
vote for 2600K. Since you buy latest and best PC, hardly another platform will significantly outperform yours. Waiting in IT area can be long - from announce to stock can be half year!
 
Everybody said I should wait and upgrade to Sandy Bridge in december 2010. Guess what? I waited, and am still waiting for the B3 motherboards now, 3 months later :D I'm just using this as an example... I would not have waited if it were urgent.
 
xera: I agree with all your advisors :) Sandy is such a power that it worth waiting (esp. after my Core 2 Duo ha-ha :) ). Moreover: it's just annoying mistake with controller, you could have your system way more earlier. But what serious happen? I'm also on the way to build my own Sandy :) (parts already ordered). Just a bit more patience - boards are already delivered to retailers.

yes, it is going to be worth the wait! I am also coming from C2D muhaha, some benchmarks show a 100% performance increase for me! Which cpu did you have? Mine is the E6750

I have already been using my new GPU and SSD whilst I wait, and my RAM and PSU are already lined up... Just need to get mobo and 2600k and a case now...

Well on jan 31 we heard about the intel chipset issue.
Seeing as I use my pc for work, it didn't seem to make any sense getting one, only to send it back later... as I would need something to work on in the mean time. It's easier this way.

Which mobo did you order? And from where?
 
My E8600 by benchmarks somewhere on the bottom compared even to previous gen. i7 - I decide definitely change my workhorse. :) I ordered Gigabyte P67A-UD7 from Rectron.

+1. If you need it buy it now....by the time a new processor is released, an even newer one will be lined up. Are you then going to wait for the newer one? It's an endless cycle.
 
not to jump on the bandwagon but im kinda in the same boat just not that much of an urgency,
I have a working Q6600 that is running very well with 6GB ram but I cant help but get that
nagging feeling that its time to start looking out for good deals. The SandyB right now seems
really good but holding out till Q2 for the new releases ... well that just seems right for me right now.
