News server related queries

Hi guys, how can I upload my dvd to the local news server as I want to promote it ?

start here: http://www.slyck.com/ng.php?page=1

Hey guys,
Can someone please help me.

1. What International newsservers are there which you recommend?
2. Can you practically download everything at full speeds?
3. Are the prices good/ compared to the service and its speeds, and content.
4. Is there any problems with the international servers?
5. Any other info I must be aware of?

1. Giganews, Easynews etc (http://www.newsgroupreviews.com/Giganews.html)
2. Pretty much, but this depends on your Access link (DSL subject to contention etc)
3. Matter of opinion. the service level is very high so yes the prices are good - otherwise, quantify with a frame of reference
4. minimal except the total cost for everything (throughput is always very good if that is what you mean, with minimal downtime)
5. depends on what you are thinking of (feel free to pm me for more info)

I don't know about the others, but I have used Giganews for about six months now. They are very fast, never had any problems. I subscribed to their minimum package, the 2 Gb one. If I could afford it I would go for their unlimited package. They have excellent retention (stuff stays cached on their servers for a long time).

I have not detected any shaping or limits from our side, except out stupid caps :(

If I had unlimited, that is definitely the way to go.

Put it this way, SAIX uses Giganews (I think IS as well). That should say something.

Personal experience, I have access to an "unlimited" Giganews account (they call it a Terabyte account or something) and have opened up to 100 connections before :) and it flatlines your connection at full speed (with the usual disclaimers of course, contention ratio , time of day, backhual etc etc)

what was the extension on those text files?

.txt i think. opens with notepad when i double click it. the file contains some crazy code stuff like
MKC[[';'I__O21.^(Y;MEVCL/8W#1#,K3:PQN&!V59FP]C<L@,VP-A[&XLJ;7
M/LB4<,(9HAHW4ZJBYAE0<GSL"PX&DE.OV$UE:71*AR0-HW1D7W#J$Z5>N>8:
M/>=0I?(L<"8EKUO2>EZ_#%.VWOGD3KV/J+*2<:D<SK"9PN:M*UC9I$4E@V,8

would you guys rather recommend alt.binz or grabit?

that is weird. Has never happened to me.

I use Grabit and has always worked well for me.

Maybe the person who uploaded the music files messed up on the upload somehow?

To upload an actual file to a "news server":

1. Get PowerPost at http://www.powerpost.cjb.net/ or through a news server, local NZB is ftp://ftp.uunet.co.za/pub/incoming/nzb/powerpost.nzb
2. The basics are, you line up your files, you look for an appropriate newsgroup to post to eg alt.binaries.divx for movies etc. and then you upload.
3. If you get stuck, find a tutorial here: http://www.binaries4all.com/powerpost/ :)

I can only imagine if you upload something on a SAIX account that it will be cached on SAIX but I have not confirmed this theory yet !

Do not post anything private, anything you post is bound to be downloaded by people all around the world !

The SAIX news server is not a server but rather operates like a caching proxy for Giganews. Thus, uploads will likely not be cached in transit, but who knows...

Your Grabit is set to download broken files as text files.

ok, i had a look at the settings but all i can find is "save articles without attatchments as text" - would that be it? the box is checked at the moment... thanks!

Uhm yes. You can post it. Then when you have posted it. wait a short while then you should be able to see it on newzleech.com if you search for it. :-)

As has already been said, yes everyone in the world with a access to a USENET service which is subscribed to the newsgroup that you post to will have access it. Basically 99.99% of people with a GigaNews or any other pay account will have access to it.
EDIT2: And anyone with a decent ISP who has a free news server, which is MANY people ;)

To answer your second question, yes you can post using a local account.

Be cautious of what you post though, if I remember correctly SAIX even have a clause in their terms and conditions about not posting binaries to non-binaries groups, copyrights, etc

EDIT1: Ok, in your case it's IS and not SAIX but they may have something similar in place...

It is not down, just heavily overloaded at the month end. Try it tomorrow (first of the month) and it will be back to normal. Also be aware that it is shaped during weekdays. I would try it tomorrow (Thursday) after 6 pm.

What speed you getting at the moment?

I'm only getting 60kB/s.

hard to say, im busy downloading stuff off ftp.up.ac.za as well and im only on a 384k line. going around 30kbs in grabit though... which im happy with =)

im curious though... why does both news.saix.co.za and news.saix.net work? 2 different servers? or is the one routed towards the other?
