hard to say, im busy downloading stuff off ftp.up.ac.za as well and im only on a 384k line. going around 30kbs in grabit though... which im happy with =)

im curious though... why does both news.saix.co.za and news.saix.net work? 2 different servers? or is the one routed towards the other?

Same thing, just diff names.
news.absa.net etc also work

Sorry about the typo, i am using news.saix.net and news.is.net? none work? i have been trying for a while now, could this be because the server is overloaded?.. i must be doing something wrong (tried grabbit and alt.binz)

is there a way to tell if the server is down, besides asking someone?

edit: ^^^^^^^^ i even added news.absa.net just to try? maybe my router? i am on a telkom account if that helps?

Yes and what seems to be the problem? It looks fine to me. Just exstract the archive

With a Telkom account you will not be able to access the IS news server.

umm.. im probably taking a long shot here... but if you have a full international cap left and you start downloading from newshost (say at the beginning of the month), will that affect your international cap? because i wouldnt put it past the fsckers to charge local usage to international til the int cap is gone...

not really no, it won't affect your cap because the nzb files that newshost hosts are relatively small but it will count towards your cap

if you mean downloading from a local news server, yes it counts as part of your "blended" GB. To be fair, you pay for 3GB of Internet usage - the extra local after cap is a "bonus" (up until the "free" threshold). iow you don't pay for 3GB international only per se.

yeah i could not connect to news.saix.net, as the servers where busy (i think) i tried now and it says connected!

er, everything on Giganews is cached by Giganews - that s there business model in other caching vs non-caching is irrelevant. it all comes down at the same (full) speed.

If you're on giganews you should be getting stuff @ full speed - that is the point of a paid news server after all.
