News server related queries

Newshost.za.net has been sold and as of Thursday 24th April whoever has bought it has taken the site offline. All you can see right now is the Hosting provider's default page. Hopefully whoever has bought it is busy doing something nice so that it will come back with lots of cool new features! :)

Damn SAIX news server also appears to be down for me...

You'd think capacity would be less of a problem with Newshost dead.

Argh!!!

Was about to post that it was up all day for me, just went down a few minutes ago, must be my turn for "shedding"

Jeez, don't you people read?

The SAIX server is NOT down... it is just very busy.

It is near the end of the month... it is ALWAYS busy at the end of the month.

but it is NOT down, I downloaded six gigs off it last night.

Other than that it is ALWAYS shaped during the day as well.

Best time to try now is late at night.

+1

I'm sick of trying to explain the same thing over and over, which is why I never responded.
Newshost has nothing to do with SAIX people!

For many people, if they can't connect for hours then the other side must be down, even if it is up ;)

What makes it more annoying (and confusing probably) is that the SAIX news server cannot be pinged to check whether it is up or down.

When it takes long to connect, I just leave it on. Later on when I check again it's usually downloading as usual. The speeds have been pathetic lately though.

Maybe we can ask the mods to add four points to the first post in big letters?

1) The Newshost Site has nothing to do with the news servers, SAIX and IS!

2) These servers are heavily overloaded, esp. at the end of the month. Please do not post a notice that the server is down. It is probably not down, just very busy, try again in 24 hours.

3) The SAIX news server appears to be shaped during the day.

4) The Newshost site was sold on 23rd April 2008, apparently to Bitfarm.

The SAIX server must be damn "busy".

I left GrabIt running for 14 hours and it couldn't connect.

The URL is still news.saix.co.za:119 right?

It's shaped from 9:00 to 18:00.

In fact, shaping turns on at 08:00 (weekdays, excluding public holidays) and turns off at 18:00

Weekends are unshaped 24/7

Primary url is news.saix.net - not that it matters, many other URL's are being redirected to the same IP address. So just do a dns lookup for news.saix.net to confirm that you are using the right server

Keep in mind that there are probably 10 users or more per 1 slot so to speak on the server. And it is weekend. And it is end of the month. So there must be quite a queue for connections... Just keep it running, it will connect eventually. I've seen that if you download cached content, it will work much better - how you determine what is cached or not is up to you...

If newshost has been sold, what about our personal information like passwords and such?
