News server related queries

Hmm, damn this is the first I am hearing of this 1st two weeks only.
same here.

Anyway - both SAIX and IS have their ups and downs. The advantage of SAIX is also more apparent when d/l un-cached items content.
By the way if we are going to merge all threads that relate to the same topic can we also please do so with everything else on these forums that relate to the same topic! Perhaps all the crime threads can be put into one thread etc! I had a particular query which was time dependant and wished for it to get answered by whoever was able to and not necessarily only the NS specialists, hence a new thread with a new title that those who could answer would be able to. People who are familiar with NSs may not have bothered to go back into an NS FAQ thread!
For this subject the current method of confining all the NS related discussions to one thread is a compromise that seems to have worked.
Bwana are you able to connect to the SAIX NS now?
Yes and I'm getting full speed as compared to 8kbs on IS for the same download.

I guess nowadays one must purchase both SAIX and IS local accounts and download from both servers simultaneously in order to get optimum performance.

Even then, we probably would not be able to max out our lines during working hours :(

Still very grateful for the servers though. I wonder if Neotel will have their own NS?

Newshost is for sale, so an IS account may not be a great idea for everyone.:(

That is useless then! At least the IS one you can get downloads all the time even if they are slow! Seems a few people on here may have been lying!

And yes I know there is a sticky but I tend to find existing threads that are very long are ignored by most people when they appear in the new posts list.

This is what I downloaded off the SAIX news server last month.... :p

So if that is lying then so be it. ;)

I cannot connect at all using news.saix.net or 196.43.2.61 - why can some connect and others not?

We are not staying connected all the time. It is coming and going. It will stay like this until the end of the month. It fluctuates with how many people are trying to access the server at the same time. Simple traffic phenomena. You might experience a similar condition on your way to work tomorrow.

btw, if you are on international and you are absolutely wanting speed right now... and have to have it... then take out a Giganews subscription. Their lowest package is quite reasonable. And they give a two day free trial.

sorry for the advertising :p

Thanks Garyvdh, I agree with you on that traffic to work :D

Hey guys I have heard it mentioned that SAIX NS does not work that well during "office hours". Last night I was getting excellent speeds but when I got home earlier today my speeds have been up and down but basically very slow and peaky!

Now my question is, what is regarded as "office hours"? It is now 5:30pm and my speeds are still slow and not the constant speed I had last night.

IS woes

I have just switched over to SAIX from Internet Solutions and have changed the server in Grabit to news.saix.net but I am having no joy getting anything to download.

Have I made a mistake or is the reliable SAIX NS I got promised actually down at the moment?

To LancelotSA or anyone else that may help

Three months ago I decided to try out the IS news server and for 3 months have had very little success.

I use Alt.Binz and for most of the time the download graph is flat lined with and an occasional blip which only lasts a few seconds. I have been trying all times of the day and month with old and new articles but have had no luck.

Will I only see success on Cached items?

Should I not even bother with things that are not cached?

Do people actually have success in using the IS news server. I am not talking just now (being after the 20th of the month and all), but in general. I am finding it difficult to believe people are getting results from IS after all the struggles I have had over the last three months. (not trying to be rude, but it is frustrating getting no results  for so long)

I have no problems with router settings or ISP restrictions because SAIX news server works fine. A bit slow recently but fine.

Any help will be much appreaciated
Thanks

Ensure that ARTICLE cmd is checked when creating a server in Alt.Binz. Not having that option checked will cause Alt.Binz to discard articles which the server does not have (yet). With this option enabled, Alt.Binz seems to keep trying.

The SAIX server does not seem to have this problem (works without the ARTICLE cmd).

Yes, I must say that the SAIX server is usually pretty good at pulling non-cached items. I generally can get them at speeds of 80 to 100 kbps. I know if a download is cached on SAIX cos it comes down at 300 to 400 kbps in a very steady stream.

People just don't seem to get the end of the month problem though. (For IS it seems like an all-month problem). The more users are trying to access the server the more overloaded it is and will seem as if the server is offline.

I really like alt.binz a lot, but haven't been able to use it to its full potential, for the following reason: I use both IS and SAIX servers simultaneously, which works fine in Grabit. But using both servers in Alt.binz often results in only partially downloaded files (like articles have been skipped). Alt.binz always works correctly if I use either IS alone or SAIX alone.

Do you think the ARTCLE command could be the culprit? Or could there be some other reason for the problem?

Okay thanks i will try again tonight with those settings on something that has been cached today and see how well IS performs

I use both IS and SAIX at the same time in Alt.binz, works perfectly. For IS you definitely need the ARTICLE cmd enabled, SAIX it doesn't seem to matter.
