News server related queries

I really like alt.binz a lot, but haven't been able to use it to its full potential, for the following reason: I use both IS and SAIX servers simultaneously, which works fine in Grabit. But using both servers in Alt.binz often results in only partially downloaded files (like articles have been skipped). Alt.binz always works correctly if I use either IS alone or SAIX alone.

Do you think the ARTCLE command could be the culprit? Or could there be some other reason for the problem?

Well, the problems that I had without enabling the ARTICLE cmd on the server are as follows:
  • Periodically, files in the download queue would be marked with a red background - that is just after I see in the status window that the server is saying "Don't have it" when trying to download a specific article.
  • Alt.Binz would then skip onto the next article and also fail, until it had tried every article once.
  • Every time I got saw this behavior, the files that had a red background would be incomplete after downloading - for example, I expect a file to be 20 megs in size, but it is only 1 meg.
  • If I then tried to re-download these incomplete files a little later by importing the nzb again, then the same occurred but the resulting files would be larger (but still incomplete).

What I think was happening is that Alt.Binz says to the server - give me the article which makes up this file. The server says "Don't have it", but starts to download (cache) it. Then, later, the missing article would be cached and the next attempt to download it would be successful.

The ARTICLE cmd fixed that - no more incomplete downloads from IS. As I mentioned - this has never been a problem for me with SAIX.

Edit: Just remember to double click the server in Settings, check the ARTICLE cmd and then click apply. I thought a single click and ARTICLE cmd check was enough, but the settings are not saved then.

Thanks. I'm going to try that. Grabit is really very buggy, messy and wasteful of both time and bandwdith compared to Altbinz.

I wish SAIX can give us some stats on their bandwidth usage and traffic. It would be good to see

One of the side effects of their capping policies. People tend to maximise their usage as much as possible. If there were no caps, demand would go down. High demand would be shared among a select few ;)

Same with power :p

Mine is not suffering ATM.

More and more you hear about high usage customers simply being told to go elsewhere. I'm surprised that approach has not been adopted here.

How long is SAIX still going to be down. Mine isin't connecting sing 17:50 and still no connection.

It's definitely not down, I've been downloading from it all day, still going now.

I've noticed that some people complain about not being able to connect for a long time, while others are connecting fine in this time. It does sound a bit like load shedding  Maybe they're "shedding" certain IP blocks at a time to make the server run smoothly

I think its more a case of those that are already connected are fine, but the server refuses new connections.

Yeah, I know that has been mentioned. But I've never experienced the "cannot connect for a few hours" thing. Or I've just been really lucky each time, cause I've never waited more than 5 minutes to get a connection.

I connected after 10 pm last night and while it was slow I still managed to pull 3 Gigs down. I dunno what you people are doing or why you say it is "down". It is busy, but it is not down. Just be patient for Pete's sake. It is always like this at the end of the month.
