Polka Dot Problems???

Hi there,
im a beginner at the usenet and news server stuff and i've been trying to download stuff for months with no success. I'm using polka as an ISP and I'm using news.mweb.co.za. when I try download the newest stuff off merlin's portal through alt.binz it never downloads. Almost like the files aren't there? Can anyone please help me???

Does the older stuff download? news.mweb.co.za is the saix news server as far as I can recall and you're probably trying to download uncached stuff (these local news servers don't actually store much). Uncached has to be pulled down from international news servers by the local ones.

I don't know if that made sense. But then I'm not entirely sure excactly what the problem is that you are describing.

Have you ever gotten anything from that news server? Are you actually sure you can connect to it?

rather than using mweb try the saix one and IS, then when one connects you know that: that is your Tier 1 ISP.

The weird thing about mweb's address is that it has a IS IP address on IS and a SAIX address on a SAIX account...

OK, that's not the one I was thinking of (Kaspersky is known to cause that spiking behaviour), but you can try disabling text or e-mail scanning in the virus scanner and see if it makes a difference.

Avast is also known to do this. It's one of the modules that gets installed, and under that there is an option to let NNTP traffic through without scanning it. Can't remember the module now, I stopped installing that module

well my dad, got it for the family while i was still studying. but 2 answer the main question.

I can connect to mwebs news server beacuse it says "connected", LOL and I can do that get groups option in Alt.binz. so I can see there are tons on entries in those groups. I just can't download anything. I have succesfully downloaded something once but it was missing alast few parts. but other than that I haven't been able to do anything.

Is there a problem using polka? and secondly how can I download off local news servers if I don't know whats on them???

well, I don't download anything really? the only thing I could download was an old like music nzb (from a local nzb forum) but it couldn't complete because it was missing files.
anyway, I can also connect to the 'IS' news server but I can't download anything there either. From my understanding is that if I get a new NZB file file Merlin's Portal it should be able to download via a loacal news server like 'news.mweb.co.za' even if the download is very slow sumthing should still happen. is this correct?

Yes, news article are available from any news server, effectively. I think you are struggling with uncached articles hence the slowness. What connection do you have anyway?

I'm using 2 GIG ADSL Polka account at 384kbps

how does the invite system work on nzbsa? my fried invited me, i entered the code and was told that the invitee must confirm. does it send a link to his email or a message to his inbox on nzbsa? he cheked his message inbox but there was no message but can only check his email at work monday. hope i dont have to wait till monday!

Polka Dilemma News Puzzle...Solution required?

If anyone is familar with this problem in Alt.binz please let me know. I have the "select group" option selected in my server options and I have no success in downloading anything
