News server related queries

hmmm, let me try. It did give me problems, but eventually I got it.

Hmmm, I wonder if it is detecting Telkom's transparent proxy IP address (much like Rapidshare does) and it thinks the same IP address is trying to sign up. Because I also get the message "You are not allowed to register multiple accounts on this forum." :(

Ah no worries mate. newzleech is working quite well frankly, except for a few NZB's that don't want to start downloading. Getting downloads at 80kB/s through saix news server, which aint that bad for a 384 line.

ok, I have PMed Merlin with the problems we are having signing on to Merlin's Portal. Hopefully we will be able to sort something out.

OK, so as we thought, the security software was detecting the IP address as one user... so this is Merlin's reply...

It is possible the security software onsite is detecting the ip as a multiple accounts, however i am willing to create accounts via you will there referrer, basically one mess's up they all go. If you give me username and a valid email either hotmail or gmail as these have no issues receiving our site emails and i will set the accounts up, all new addition must come from you to me directly

So those are the rules for Merlin's Portal:

1) If you want a new Merlin's Portal account PM me.
2) You must give me your desired username and e-mail address (Merlin will issue you with a password).
3) I will forward your info to Merlin to set up the account.
4) From there the account will be yours to set up as you want.
5) Be aware that we ALL fall under the same IP address, so if one of you cheats or messes up, then we all get banned.
6) You must preferably use a hotmail or gmail account e-mail as those are able to receive the e-mails from Merlin's Portal.

If you have any other questions you can send e-mail to Merlin ... [email protected]

This is all because of Telkom's stupid transparent proxy which is screwing us all when it comes to rapidshare and other site login issues like this. Thanks again Telkom for being our big Pal! *** dripping sarcasm ***

news2 was just a trial run. I'm not sure what the number of connections is on SAIX at the moment? Anybody?

Ja SAIX2 is still there, but most guys say it just resolves to the same address as SAIX1. Unless they somehow merged the two. Can anyone shed anymore light on this?

Pinging news.saix.net [196.43.2.61]
Pinging news2.saix.net [196.43.2.61]

Saix is Saix2 is Saix

Logically if "SAIX2" was a trial and no longer "exists" yet the service is much better now and you tend to always get a connection (or at least more of the time), one could deduce that "SAIX2" was integrated using some form of load balancing. No biggie, just means you only get your 2 connections (not 4 as may have been possible, I can't remember). So whether there are 2 servers are 32, it makes no difference. All load balanced systems work this way, resolving to the same IP etc. You think www.google.co.za is one server? :)

Uhg, I made a mistake to go with IS. I just can't get any download going through their news server. SAIX server worked liked a dream when I gave it a try. Damn pitty SAIX local is so much more expensive.

return on investment wise it is probably cheaper. Though IS GBs can have other "uses" ;) Rather look at the "free" SAIX local-only on a capped account i.e. R79 or whatever for 1GB SAIX -- you get 2GB international (roughly) plus 10-15GB local only.. so that's R5ish per GB - almost IS prices

In summary:
1. No one is stopping you from using news servers, feel free.
2. If you are expecting news servers to be as easy as torrents or any P2P service, you are starting off with the wrong viewpoint - news servers require considerably more user interaction (esp. with PARs, etc)
3. NewsHost is owned by an individual. It's his. He pays for it, and is under no obligation whatsoever to share it.
4. The address for IS is news.is.co.za on port 119 (5 connections allowed)
The address for SAIX is news.saix.net on port 119 (2 connections allowed)
The address for CyberSmart eludes me right now, but it is somewhere on this forum.
5. To learn about news servers (USENET) try this page.
6. To get NZBs try merlins-portal.net or newzleech.com

Is that right however? Cause I've been trying the whole weekend, with tons of different files from different NZB sites. I just can't think that IS will not even budge once on any of them. Or are there more settings that I'm missing?
I'm using Alt.Binz btw.

And thanks for the tip gripen, but assume that its only attainable through telkominternet ?
