....and the poll question is again loaded... happening a lot recently. I would not be getting this phone specifically for Symbian^3, I'd be getting it because of all the features and the hardware!

Firstly, the poll question itself is about the OS, not the hardware. Maybe the next one will be about the hardware, but great hardware can be let down by a junk OS. I won't name names here for fear of starting a mobile OS flame war :P.

Secondly, if none of the options suit you, nothing stops you from not voting ;-).

Thirdly, I challenge you to rewrite the poll so that isn't a boring 2-option Yes/No poll. I can't retroactively change it now, but your suggestions could be taken under advisement in future.

There wasn't space to mention it, but the N8 has a hardware 3D graphics accelerator built-in. What Nokia (and the N8) need now are developers to build 3D games for the platform that make use of the hardware.

Why develop for a dead OS? It just doesn't make sense.

If I'm a developer, I'd rather go for iOS or Android.

1. The poll seems to actually be about both the N8 and Symbian^3 considering the way the question is asked, especially considering that answer one and two refer to the brand and the actual model, and only option three and four refer to the operating system. The fact that the thread is actually about the N8 also makes the poll seem a bit misplaced then.

2. I didn't vote.

3. I am all for not having a yes/no poll but in this instance you have left no option for the person who will be getting this phone despite the fact that it looks set to be the final N-series Symbian model. That speaks volumes for the phone itself....

Its not dead, its just that Symbian will be used on more of Nokia's midrange phones. Their high-end N-Series will use Meego.

And they are building MeeGo so that it can interact with Symbian^3

I am fully aware of all these numbers as I read the article that someone posted on here recently in reference to the outgoing CEO (I think it was). It does not change the fact that my initial response was to a post which stated that "Nokia seriously has to do something spectacular if they want to stay in the game". They are well in the game....

Feel free to check out the stats regarding OS penetration too.

This graph sums it up (again from Asymco)
Shows quarterly profits from major phone makers since 2007. The big winners are RIM and Apple. The big loser is clearly Nokia (and a lots of others!). The other manufacturers are relying on Android to return to profitability. Motorola are becoming a mainly Android supplier, they are starting to make a profit. LG is also investing heavily into it.

True - Symbian has had its day - but it still manages to do more than most of the fruity hype phones on the market these days. I am guessing that the next N8 will be on Meego since that is Nokia's mid term strategy.

That was just a load of excuses for Nokia performing so poorly. I'm sorry but all the cell manufacturers mocked Apple iPhone when it came out and said it would fail.

Nokia has kept it's large marketshare and will continue to make cheap phones but they still have nothing on the iPhone or Android models which make the most money.

Really? Funny I read it and saw it saying what many have been saying for ages, and that is that most of these incredible, cutting edge features that the iPhone supposedly has have been standard on other phones for ages.

If you bothered reading it you would also have noticed that iPhone is produced for a niche market. It cannot be compared to Nokia. You pay a premium for a phone just because of the name and not for the features. Actually you pay for all the marketing!

If it is all about just making money and not making exceptional phones then yes I concede, Apple have Nokia beat....

I would not compare the N8 (a multimedia smartphone) with any apple device (locked down fashion phones). It is a bit of a derogatory comparison for the N8.

Rather compare it with something worthwhile that supports more open standards - like an Android phone. Sure, taking into account the overall package nothing can beat the N8 but at least if you compare it with something android you are leveling the play field because its pointless to compare phones with apples (or oranges for that matter).
