Nokia N8

I find that it's fine. Not quite as slick as iOS, but way better than previous Symbian incarnations.

Well boys....the deals are now released for the N8 on Vodacom. See below.

I plan on getting the N8 on Business Call for R185 per month and just swapping the sim for my current prepaid one. I've got an old 32k sim (10 years old or so). Is there any benefit to upgrading to a newer sim and would it be possible to keep my number as well. I know it is possible on contract but what about upgrading a prepaid sim and staying on prepaid?

Yes it can be easily done. I think it has benefits. Not sure but I think you need a new SIM for HSDPA+ speeds

Has anyone actually found a store with stock of the n8?
My local mtn says stock arriving late in december! What about the mtn pre-orders? Has anyone actually been contacted yet?
I give up. The ads are out already for something thats not available yet.
Virgin is the same. The store says that the warehouse does not have any stock yet.

Got mine from an Autopage store. Check on their site and try calling their various stores to find out if they have stock.

i'm getting mine either today or tomorrow. from MTN online

Have called Vodacom SP Platinum call centre (082 1903) and tried to order the N8 - about 4 times already over the last week. Their operators say that the phone is experiencing issues and will not be released on the Vodacom network till sometime December. I called so many times just to make sure was not speaking to someone with dud info - but each time the same story.

Funny thing is the likes of Vodacoms other SPs like Autopage have been shipping since two weeks ago.

& the adverts are already out...virgin has a radio spot, Cell C had a dummy model to 'look' at & MTN had it on pre-order, so what problem could there possibly be with the phone?
more likely its a problem with Vodacom, not the phone

LOL I've got mine for two weeks now and have yet to experience any problems with it. A problem with Vodacom indeed :D

Unofficial N8 Review

Gosh, I saw the Voda promo with the N8 free on business call going for R185 on Friday and I tried to get one yesterday.
The Vodashop at Wonderpark is sold out. This morning I sent emails to Menlyn, Hatfield, Brooklyn and other surrounding Vodashops/ 4U stores.
Three shops responded that they have stock and I should come tomorrow morning to get one.

Guess what, I had no idea that my sister had one (MTN) since last week Thursday, it's still in box, surprisingly.
I asked for it, inserted my simcard (took me a few minutes as I was trying to open the battery cover, little did I know that the SIM works as a "hot swap" - located next to the card slot. Lol, the battery cover doesn't open - ala iPhone, well at least I couldn't open it).

Anway, so I played with it for about 2 hrs, when u first switch it on, it asks you to register (Nokia Account needed), I did that, then got an sms to welcome me.
I then went to the default standby screen and signed in for Social networks (FB and Twitter) (widgets). Then it was Nokia emails, then a bit of rearranging the standby screens (you get three of those, to move around between them you just press the On-screen (standby screen) button in the middle (lower middle) OR just swipe to the Left or Right.)

I didn't particularly like Twitter and Facebook once you go through the applications, they look nice from the Standby screen though (widgets). Basically they look like those of my old Xpress Music - haven't been update, looks a bit dull IMO. The email however Gmail), looks superb! U can choose how many emails to get (inbox and folders) up to 100 mails - I think. I miss this in my current e71 (emails are limited to, 7 days? cant recall). The emails really looks amazing in full HTML and all that, just like using gmail on web - Chrome.

I then proceeded to the Music and went straight to the FM Transmitter - I love this feature! For those familiar with the N97, you can transmit your music in the car, you just choose the frequency - just like your normal iTrip, etc. It's a great feature. The Music itself is not as great, but once I hooked up my iPhone headphones I really started to enjoy it.

Going to the Music store, it asks you to register, which i did (logged in) and asked to activate my 6 month unlimited music download - which i obviously did not do.

Then it was the camera/video, I would rather not say anything here, least i spoil all those amazing reviews you have already read.

Ovi maps, just amazing - just as it was on my Xpress music. Basically it has extra features which I believe you have read about.

Overall Impressions

It's an amazing gadget, everything just works, emails, social networks, music, photos, video, web (using opera Symbian edition - beta), the UI interface, boy I boy it is just amazing. BUT, for a hard core qwerty user like I am, I have never been so frustrated with it. Don't get me wrong, I know Nokia has the capacitative one here, unlike that on the N97, however, it is still the same. It took me ages to even do the phone settings, e.g. choosing the country, setup the time, etc etc.... I kept on punching a wrong key over and over again. Imagine having to type a decent email, let alone a mere sms/ tweeting and facebooking? I have used a two touch phone before this but it just feels the same! It's really not user-friendly! I am a heavy sms/email user, I send in access of 200 sms per month plus double that amount in emails from my E71. So for me the answer is no. This for me is a blessing in disguise that my sister happen to have the phone I have already made arrangements to get tomorrow. I have since replied to the guys who from (Vodashop/4U) that I will not be coming after all since I got one from my sister (I just didn't want to say the phone was crep - IMO).

Otherwise if you have had a touch phone as your default phone then this is a great upgrade! If you haven't used a touch phone, or just like me have had a bad experience with one, please rather get a demo (Wonderpark Vodashop has one, and I'm sure you will also get one at Vodaworld), spend at least 30min or so with the phone before buying one.
