Nokia N82 or Samsung Omnia

If u go with iTalk/MTN, just ensure that u get good MTN signal quality where u will be using the phone. I've found that MTN's network quality is quite a bit worse than Vodacom's, but this will vary from area to area I would imagine.

Bear in mind that text input on the Omnia can be a bit of a biaatch! And it's a little irritating the 16GB is split into 8GB onboard and 8GB on the SDHC card.

i like a phone that I can text easily with, what makes texting a bitch?
 
Ive found that MTN's coverage is not bad at all. however, it used to be very swak. BUt with mates of mine, none of them have problems with coverage.
 
OK...drum roll, I really couldnt make up my mind, so instead of taking one 350 anytime package, I've eventually decided to take both the N82 and the Omnia on a anytime 200. Combined, it still gives me the same talk time, and I get not one, but two really good devices...woohoo!!!

I would have loved the i850, but right now, I can get two for the price of that one! I think a good decision all round.

I was going to go for one device, looking around 489pm on a 350 anytime.

Now I'm getting two phones N82 @ 239pm on 200 Anytime
AND Omnia with iTalk @ 264pm on 200 Anytime = TOTAL R504pm

With 87minutes each that, gives me 174min in total and TWO devices :)
350 Anytime gives you 179 minutes.

Granted, the out of bundle rates are better on the 350 Anytime package, but I really dont think I ever go over 3 hrs of talk time in a month.

So, then all in all, yeah, I'm paying an overall R25 more than I would getting the i850, but now I can play with two devices, and have a kick ass camera(N82) and Garmin Maps(Omnia) and 3 hrs of talk!!!

It's a touch screen. Text input on a touch screen will never beat a tactile qwerty keyboard.

If i had to do it over and wanted a qwerty keyboard I might very well go for the E71.

Have u committed yourself to these 2 deals yet?

One option you could consider is getting the N82 on Anytime 200 or 350, and then get yourself a 16GB iPod Touch.

I don't see there being any joy in carrying around 2 cell phones and being bound to 2 different contracts for 24 months.

i would have gone for the E71, but the camera is crappy, and I really want a decent camera. I hate carrying around a seperate camera, I use my cell camera and video recorder such a lot to snap a quick pic of the kids etc. Its really convenient.

I havent committed to any of it yet, but I really wanted two seperate devices,one device with a great camera,and the Omnia for its gadget value and Garmin maps. buying those maps for a legit copy are pricy.

I dont mind carrying to handsets, but at any 1 time I will only carry one, with my contacts synced on both.
This time around, I'm not going for convenience of the 1 almighty device. I want to play with both and see what I prefer, then my next upgrade will either be fancy iphony, omnia type thingy or a Nokia or a BB with a proper KB. I have a BB already, so the Omnia and N82 will be competing for my next upgrade during my use of them over the next 2 years, and I wont be bored of just having a single device, and I get 3 hrs of talk time.

I've worked this one around in my head for the passed 2 weeks, and for me this is my best option. I can explain a lot more in depth why I'm doing it this way, but as whacky as it seems, its satisfying my needs :)

Keep in mind that the N82 does VGA (640x480) video at 30 FPS.

The Omnia does VGA at 15 FPS and QVGA (320x240) at 30 FPS.

So the Omnia's video quality pretty much sucks in comparison. That's not even considering still image quality. As mentioned before, rather get the N82 and iPod touch (since you want a touch device) and save yourself some cash.

Well I honestly don't see the point really, the Omnia's camera does not compare so you're effectively left with a multimedia touch screen device (since both phones can obviously make phone calls). Rather get the iPod touch for that, it's prettier and has a better interface anyway.
 
ya, as I mentioned in a previous post, I'm not getting this deal for convenience. I want to try these handsets out over the next 2 yrs and whichever one I end up liking more, will get my vote for the next upgrade.

I can explain a lot more in depth why I'm doing it this way, but as whacky as it seems, its satisfying my needs. GPS, camera, Garmin maps, 16GB storage, touch screen, 7.2 HSDPA etc etc, the list goes on. This way I satisfy functionality and gadget curiosity and tinckering and 3 hrs talk time etc etc

I struggled to find eveything I was looking for in one device, so these two will satisfy all my qwuirky techfreakedness and oh ya, i can make calls to :)

And what is the Omnia bringing to the party?!?! ;)

It will be very interesting to hear your comments once you have both devices in your possession Dudley... i hope you keep us regularly posted with first impressions etc etc.

Ryan got the Omnia and I got the N82 but this resulted in two separate individuals perspectives... and of course we had both come from Symbian so the Nokia probably had an advantage. You'll have to keep us updated!

yes, quite true, thats another reason why I had to get both
so now I can give an equal opportunity for them both to show me their nuts and bolts, who knows, maybe the Nokia still has bigger nuts :)

I most definitely will keep the thread updated, just as soon as I got both devices in my possession, I will start blogging. Its going to be an interesting experience and I think this mode of research will eventually be named after me :) (because SP's will love me for getting everyone to buy two devices :)

Had to turn my 3G off cause the connection kept getting lost, so I only run on EDGE when i'm not on WiFi and need a data connection.

Surely there's another hand held device that plays DivX and Xvid, etc... the bitch with an iPod Touch being the required conversion to mp4?
 
1 - yes , correct, the device BRAND or SUCCESSOR, is what I meant, yes

2 - yes, correct, for two devices, I think its a good deal. I'm only paying R936 for the N85 and R1536 for the Omnia. The rest is actual airtime, which cant be avoided.

3 - Well, technically, nearly any high end device can play divx etc, if you can install the correct software for the device. One of the highest drivers for the choice was cost versus bang for buck. I dont think any other devices can compare with these 2 currently, all round (wooo, opening a can of worms), but seriously, for what I'm paying, CURRENTLY, you cant really get more features etc, research it and you will see. And finally, this is my choice, and makes sense in my mind and satisfies what I intend doing with the feature set. :) Someone else may choose differently.

So, just to reiterate, my criteria which resulted in this decision, is the following:

1-Price and features, get as much as I can for my money
3-I needed 2 devices, 1 for me and 1 for the wife, so I had to find something under 600pm, as that is what I am currently paying for cell usage between the two of us.
4-Decent camera - N82, because I dont carry a seperate camera around.
5-Decent GPS, Omnia comes with lifetime Garmin maps, thats going to save me a bundle
6-Satisfy my tinkering, gadget-freakedness - what a pleasure, 2 entirely different devices I can now push to the edge and fiddle with.
7-Get as much talk time as I can aswell as two decent devices
8-See for myself how each device performs and lives out its life!

In 2 years time, so much will have happened with cellular phone technology that it's unlikely that these current phones will be much of an indication of what their successors can do. By that point, reading a review about whats on the market at that point in time will be more useful than what the N82 and Omnia are currently capable of.

Windows Mobile 7 will be out, which is supposed to fix the issues that people have with WinMo 6.

Nokia is sure to have a decent range of touch screen phones out by then.

But as u say, u want/need 2 devices for u and the mrs, and u have given ur reasons as to why u want what u want, so the above is just my added 2 cents
