Official Afrihost Q&A Thread

So uncapped is not uncapped in your terms, and paying 450R a month for a 4mbit account eventually equates to 196 lol. You should really revise the pretty graphics on your website. But you have cleared up alot of misinformation.

Another benefit of your honesty is that most excessive users will leave, increasing the quality of the experience for everyone else.

Naa - those left behind will realize there's more bandwidth and start downloading tons. Oh wait - you can't. You get throttled to ISDN speed

(Though if they don't so much downloading why in the world would they go for uncapped.)

The net result is its brought about a huge drop in per gig pricing, especially for 384kbps users.

Gian, the fact that you will reduce speed on all protocols after certain thresholds is extremely regrettable. There also seems to be no distinction between after-hour use and peak-hour use. I am happy about the shaping particularly during busy periods, but I'm not happy about the total throttling of the line after such relatively low usage. What are you going to do with your capacity a few weeks into the month when half of your clients are throttled? You are just going to have a lot of very disgruntled users and a underutilized pipe.

It has worked very well for me so far, since I only use 3-4 Gb's per day. Will this package I've signed up for also suit my needs midway through April? Clearly not. Which is very disappointing.

 looking for attention?

You are not an excessive downloader, so i wouldn't worry about it. I meant nothing by my remark, the simple fact is that users with very high bandwidth requirements are better served by an axxess express account.

Which is hardly broadband. What happens when Telkom upgrades those lines to 1Mbps and you downloads increase.

Afrihost will just throttle you to 128 kbps. And you thought 384 was slow!

i guess the existing afrihost clients will go back to capped accounts because they can get full speed ...

Out of interest, whats going to happen to the guys that use the 8mb accounts  They'd be shaped in half a day and throttled in a day.

Thanks Gian for clearing everything up. It's still a good deal if you do about 40 - 60 gb a month and don't mind a bit of port shaping (only past 30gb). Works out to under R9 :) And I am confident that that threshold will increase in the next months to come. So good things on the horizon.

I'd advise WHEN you change the above 'rules' or 'terms' again - you let your uses know.

I agree with that, but remember that T&C's may be changed without notifying the user as it is up to the user to check..... blah blah blah. But yes, I do see your point.

I personally think that the throttling speeds are a little overkill, rather after x GB used, add more aggressive shaping to the ports (I know they can do it on account level (per user basis) now and not merely just group level) and maybe after ie 200GB start killing maximum speed. But I know that browsing the web at 128 will be horrible (often it's bad enough at 384 with all the fancy websites).

The only company which will likely give a better offer will be mweb, and itll be run at a loss until telkom drops the ipc pricing. I suspect mweb may be planning to do the whole loss leader thing for a few months.

Looking at the raw wholesale numbers, which are widely published, isps simply can't do much better at the moment. I want to download a TB as much as the next guy, but i can't expect afrihost to pay for it. Proper uncapped is coming, but only in a year or so.

lol after 500gig, perhaps 28.8kb ;) Sorry thats a cheapshot, but kinda funny to think about it!

Well - it'd avoid a similiar backlash ... if you're 'in testing' - involve your 'test subjects' in the process...

I feel a bit like Marvin the Paranoid Android from Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy - very depressed. :(
