Official Afrihost Q&A Thread

Well - it'd avoid a similiar backlash ... if you're 'in testing' - involve your 'test subjects' in the process...

Very true.... especially because it's in testing and lots of changes have been (and will still) occur.

My first response from Afrihost in over a day...

Gian - can you confirm the procedure is correct for a refund for APRIL - I am not interested in the pro-rata refund? (I really hope the Q&A thread has an A part.)

It is really sad to see you leave us! If there is anything we can do to keep you with us, please let us know.

Gian,

Thanks for responding. Instead of categorizing through amount of cap used why don't you simply make it 200GB international, completely uncapped and unthrottled local (Most people that perform heavy downloads are happy with local only bandwidth) and then rate limit to 384KBps once they hit the 200GB. Judging from the comments in the other forum topic it has become evident that MOST would be happy to have access to 120 to 200GB (mostly sub 120GB of avg usage was mentioned) You could even do the same as Mweb and shape certain ports dramatically during the day and ease up on the shaping at night) This will leave time for work and play as there are very few people who use their internet connections purely for play. Some of us really do NOT want to leave Afrihost and personally I do believe this is all manageable. As long as the right expectation is set as you have done above and communicated thoroughly.

I know for myself that I have averaged between 100 and 120GB per month for the last year. Of this estimated usage for personal (streaming youtube, gaming, episodes etc) have made up only about 20 to 25% of my total traffic. Some of the more heavy users are generally in IT related jobs and the more you support their needs the more they will support you. By word of mouth advertising and such you will increase your revenue. Ask any IT person regardless of the role he performs how many times he has been asked the question (which ISP should I use and what package should I get). We always get asked (because we are in IT :p)

Just a thought - use it don't use it.

P.S. I have worked for an institution where we had to limit traffic use significantly. If you would like to know the measures that we used to fully utilize our bandwidth while keeping everyone happy you are welcome to PM me and I will answer any questions you have.

I have an account with Afrihost (Capped) and congrats to them for starting the price war.
Also well done on Gian for clearing everything up but I feel this should have been done right from the word go to be honest.
If I went to buy a TV and it was adertised at 1080P but after I watched 10 movies I got downgraded to 720P I would have liked to know about it from the beginning.

But really, all the best to them!

That is what ultimately will happen.. it will just take a few months to get to that level...

I unfortunately can use more than 60GB in a month without even touching torrents or newsgroups... Doing SQL reporting and testing and stuff chews through bandwidth... and having a vaguely smart house also doesn't help the bandwidth usage.

I had my VPN active while working from home recently and chewed through about 4 GB over the weekend just on the VPN usage, so yes, I agree that 60 GB can go very fast. Thats the exception for me though, as 10 GB is my usual limit.

I do not think any other ISP on this forum has taken so much time to give a detailed explanation of what they are trying to do and also being honest enough to say sorry. On top of that to give people refunds for bandwidth they have used I think it a fine example of a good, ethical business. Gian has explained clearly how it is going to operate (yes one can debate "Uncapped" to death) - again has anyone else done this? This all for a model that is 9 days old!!

The beauty of the free economy is we have choices. If Afrihost doesn't suit you, stop moaning and move on, and as I have said before, I do hope for you that the grass is greener on the other side.

Gian you have my respect and I am sure that Afrihost will grow and do really well.

Such a well written and informative letter! Thanks. I wanted to cancel my account but now that I think of it, 60gigs seems a lot. Sure, I'll download some series, maybe a few movies but thats about it. All I want is quick internet, where you don't have to feel guilty for watching a YouTube clip. Get a life people!

P,s If you need it for work/business fair enough..

IMO it does. What's your Youtube going to be like on 128kbps?

True, but that all depends on your usage patterns. I dont see myself being throttled to 128kbs so I dont see a problem... The uncapped accounts are meant for users who dont want to worry about an inflated bill at the end of the month, so browse, youtube and steam as much as you want just dont B*tch when your movie and series downloads get you throttled...

If you use the account as the AUP is laid out (No unattended usaged) then I doubt you will experince throttling to 128kbs.

.

MWEB has been involved for days, and is still responding to questions...or don't they count?

The problem is that everyone expected to get heavily shaped for excessive use. No problem with that. But the definition of "excessive" has now shrunk to a level that includes regular, everyday use. And for that reason, I will look elsewhere, or return to my previous uncapped account. I'm not prepared to pay R413pm to Telkom for a 128k line.

What about having a more expensive option for "power users"?

The main reason I got this and cancelled my IS Uncapped Express account was that I could still use the internet at full speed during the day
and not be soft-capped at 384kbps. I would happily pay what I paid for Uncapped Express (about R1000/month) for something like 200GB and still have full speed during the day time.

Im very happy with my mweb account. Pings were horrible but now seem sorted.
MWB has been helpfull too!
But this thread is about Afrihost :D

I transfer a lot of files via ftp for work/development purposes..... which often go above 30GB in total a month. It's not overkill, and it's not unattended either - I work with the stuff. That doesn't justify heavy throttling, just btw :)

so - I am supposed to sit and watch it download a movie, say Paranormal Activity, and then go watch it, where theoritcally, I could have watched it live (except for the constant buffering issues).

Yes they have and I certainly have not read thru all they have said but my comment is more directed at how AH is going to be running their uncapped accounts. I could be totally wrong but my understanding with Mweb is that they are very vague on when they will throttle etc. From what Gian has said he has answered people concerns at to what level control measures will be put into place.

I do feel that AH has tried to be clear on many matters that others ISPs have been very vague about

Maybe this tread should be used for Q&A only - and the others for discussing the ISPs - otherwise it'll become a mess finding anything again.

While I appreciate a plight by the ISP owners, I have to ask if users of other ISPs are finding the same throttling (after 60gb) being imposed?
