Official Afrihost Q&A Thread

Whatever you do, don't cancel you Afrihost account and move to Axxess. I made that mistake yesterday..... Rapidshare download was screaming ahead at 15kb/s for the whole night, at this rate I will get exactly 38gb in the month on Axxess if I download 24/7 every day....... So heavy shaping from the word go without any 30gb or 60gb hurdles like Afrihost.

I think this move is going to make me a very sad person for the next 30 days!!

:) I find that my connection has slowed down quite a lot since the uncapped

Mine seems fine, all my downloads are screaming at 150KB+, i had a torrent going at 290KB this morning. (mweb)

and you have a smiley emoticon? I was happy with the throttling etc provided i got my 30GB uncapped before any throttling in but it seems this is not the case. On a positive note its on 9.3kbs . FML .

Our radius servers seem to be dropping authentications randomly. Our guys are on it & I'll keep you posted. Sorry for the admin #Afrihost - GianVisser via Twitter

OMW people are phoning our support desk asking what we are going to do about it :s (no not an ISP just a support company with a large customer base)

Back to the Fair Usage Policy:

A FUP in the Uncapped ISP world has traditionally been
the most opaque, confusing set of terms that you have to
agree to.

Hi Gian,

I am not sure what you mean by this.

Over the past few days I've seen ISPs impose limits in their FUP and AUP terms where they say my uncapped account has a limit or will get limited based on a threshold which was first an uncertain amount, but has recently come into light as 60GB/200GB/etc. The problem, as many people have pointed out, is that you can't call a service uncapped if it indeed has some hidden limit making it in fact, capped.

Judging from your statement above you make it sound like it is normal for ISPs across the world to impose these FUP to uncapped accounts when it is not. If you go to major ISP websites like Comcat and Bigpond you will see them advertising ADSL/cable services at prices and speeds we can only dream of getting here in SA. Further googling will reveal that these ISPs are trying to impose usage limites to the likes of 250+GB for Comcast accounts etc. The difference comes in where they do not market it as an uncapped account. They sell INTERNET. They don't sell 4mbps internet, or uncapped internet - they sell broadband internet for $x a month.

So yes, while they can and probably do impose FUP limits on their accounts, they don't market it as uncapped because they know the difference.

Obviously I'm not aiming this directly at you but every ISP selling an "uncapped" account in South Africa who want to impose these download restrictions, as well as everyone here on mybroadband who think marketing an uncapped account with a cap is acceptable.

So once again, I'd just like to reiterate my statement that I don't quite understand what you mean by uncapped accounts having opaque and confusing terms when the "uncapped ISP world" has never had a precedent of marketing their products as such.

Sortof +1 to the above.
It wouldn't be best for our ISPs to sell "uncapped" without looking at the speeds - I as a 384 user don't feel it's fair to pay the same for uncapped as a 4Mb user - the obvious and only difference being the fact that a 384 can only do 110GB a month compared to a 4Mb user's >110GB.
But truth be told (I don't check what intl ISPs call their "uncapped packages", but most of them have a threshold/ FUP limit of 200-250GB. It's pretty fair whatever way you look at it. Based on this I would say it's fair to try and even out that limit across the month, to try and keep the total bandwidth (speed, not data) being used stable as to not flood the network. Thus one can look at implementing a light rolling window of (FUP limit/ 30)+10% (the rest of that day being limited to a slower , ie 50-75% speed) in order to achieve this.

I signed up yesterday and put through around 3 gigs last night but even yesterday afternoon not only were my torrent speeds shocking ( 15kbps on a 2meg line) but my browsing was unbearable. I have two computers on one router connected by an ethernet cable and while the one was slightly faster than the other it still took forever to load. Im not sure if it is my DNS settings as i suspect it is. I just put in the google DNS address and i will see how that goes. it took 10 minutes a page. I am giving Afrihost the month and i respect you guys as an isp. Gian and the crew have done alot to bring down ADSL prices and really in effect started all of this with their R29/ gig pricing. If my service is good i will only have the utmost pleasure in staying with Afrihost, all i expect is fast browsing in the day and good download speeds at night.

On another note Shakeel from customer support deserves a big raise. Stayed on the line with me for 20 odd minutes sorting out my connection and got it working. great customer support. Especially since I am a previous Nashua subscriber and they are pathetic to the point where it took us 3 months to get through to the people to cancel our contract with them.

ISASA, ICASA & ASA is going to be very, very busy with all the complaints they received about uncapped (capped) ADSL...!

erm... dont wanna be a d!ck here, but its kinda hard to unring a bell. How are we supposed to trust Afrihost now? Honest question...

I don't trust them at all now!! I will be cancelling my uncapped account today and getting my refund! I sure as hell also WON'T be purchasing any form of product from them in the future regardless of their prices!!

Because of bad planning and assumptions Afrihost is now having a kneejerk reaction and kicking their initial supporters, that promoted and elevated their name a few months back, in the groin! VERY poor taste!!!

You've now lost me as a capped monthly user (I purchased 15 Gb's of INT cap last month) as well as this phony 'uncapped' user!

Goodnight and GOODBYE!!!
