I was on 4.0.3 on my S2 and stuck with it for a while before I swapped out for my Note. So no idea how it's working out for you there, but I'd say 4.0.4 is quite polished and smooth enough. There is the odd occasion when there is a hint of a stutter when you catch it and it's not thinking, but not too often and not enough to detract from the overall responsiveness. I'm just having a play with the features just now, and although the PIP for the video is quite cool, I still prefer CM9 and Nova launcher for snappyness and overall feel.

So I'll mess around for a weekend and see how it goes because I've never tried out the 'S' stuff at all. But although I'll change back to CM9, I wouldn't be too miffed if I was stuck on this :)

Only ROM i see out is the German one, just waiting for the UK one and I will upgrade, not interested in going with CM until jelly bean. Never saw the benefit in it even when I was using it, other than getting ICS. Use Apex to get around the not so awesome stock ICS launcher, way better than nova.

What :eek: no phonecalls. Isn't that the point of the device and real usage stats?

The GSM modem AKA cellular service is what drains battery... Hell i put on flight mode with wifi only and with Average use I can get between 4-5 days out of the battery...
 
I noticed a few guys complaining about battery drain. I had battery drain on both 2.3.3 and 4.0.3, but I tracked them both down to a GPS wakelock issue. Turns out if you enable network location and use navigation, even after the GPS is off, there is a wakelock that drains the battery. This is most obvious as overnight battery drain. I simply disabled "Google's location service" in settings and rebooted - haven't had battery drain issues since then. Hope this helps someone out. Apologies if this was already mentioned (didn't read through whole thread).

It might be for you, but it's not for me. But of course you can try and see for yourself if you wish ;)

I'm in Senegal just now. My Note has a Vodacom sim from SA in it which rarely gets used at the moment, but it's on stand by.

I have a Galaxy pocket as my local and work phone. The Note is for everything else.

Besides, I flashed todays CM9 already so it's goodbye to stock until I get a new phone I think.
 
Advise needed

Im currently on Gingerbread(Rooted) and thinking of getting a aftermarket rom. Specifically CyanogenMod. I need a guide or walkthrough on how to do this. Any links wud help

Ok, so after some discussions with Samsung SA, it looks like there's a delay with the ics update. Apparently, it seems to be a network operator delay. On a hopefully better note, it seems that our notes will jump straight to the latest 4.0.4 version, if I read correctly. It did say, and I quote: "Once the ICS update is released, you can look forward to the 4.04 version on your Samsung Galaxy Note :)"

So, if that's anything to go by, we not waiting in vain.....:)

Ya, but 4.1.1 is already out for the Nexus S and Prime, who really cares about ICS now anymore. Seriously, my nexus s has official JB and my Note is still waiting for an official ICS.
 
What are the chances that the Note will actually get JB? From what I heard a while back, ICS is the last update for the Note... Then again, things might change.....

I am a big noob in rooting devices. Is there anybody who can put me in the right direction in rooting the Note? But yes, the manual or instructions must be spot on please?

Anybody out there who is very patient in helping me?

This is the guide I used. Will go custom if I have to to get JB, Samsung may make awesome phones but the after sales is pathetic. If AOSP made as good phones I would gladly stick with them, but they don't
 
Even custom is lagging for the Note.
Running JB on my Galaxy Tab 10.1, Asus Transformer and even my old HD2. No love for my Note yet :mad:
 
Guys sorry... Its me again. I have a quick question. What do you think about the Rocket ROM? I kind of like the look of it. And also, what is the chances that someone from the Klerksdorp/Potch Region is on the forum who have rooted their device? I am kind of scared to do it alone for the first time?

My method of Rooting

I root the device using Chainfire's method of flashing a particular stock firmware with Odin, in that particular instance it won't increase your flash counter as well. I find this the easiest most worrisome free method of rooting the Note. Go halfway down page and read this paragraph "1.3. If you are not rooted yet: Flash a modified FACTORYFS". If you go that page, all the instructions should be very clear (though it is scary in the beginning). Don't flash until you are absolutely certain, check back with us to double check your procedure, whichever one you happen to choose. Don't worry about asking us what may feel like 'dumb' questions.

I had enough of waiting for the OTA to come through and finally went through the process of rooting and then installing a custom rom. Im so Glad I did it, it's made the world of difference and now running latest ics - 4.0.4. Battery life seems to be alot better and much faster UI. I'll wait for a stable JB release before updating, but overall Im very happy at the moment.

Steps I took to get ICS:
Make sure to have samsung kies (for the samsung drivers) installed on Pc + check unknown sources on your note(under applications) and usb debugging (under developement options)
Downloaded the Got Brickbug .apk to see if my note was affected by the emmc flashbug (which it was):

Very informative and check comments field for link to get Odin and the non-wipe GB rom, I used the Europe version. Follow the instructions carefully (quite easy) to root your Note. Then follow the YouTube posters - subsequent videos aswell (shown at the end of the video) regarding flashing AbyssKernel and also how to flash a rom.

Rewatch the videos if necessary to make sure that your on the right path.

Have a look at Rootgalaxynote.com to see the differences between roms or check the development section under the N7000 Note to select the best Rom for you. I chose ParanoidAndroid's rom v0.5 because you can swap between tablet or phone mode (dpi settigs) or you can even change individual apps dpi settings. Best part is you can set it to display tablet youtube version and two-plane gmail tablet view (folders on the left, emails on the right) :)

Good luck with your rooting/rom flashing. Make sure to have an SD card pligged in, backup and store the necessary roms and other files on it. Oh and I installed Mobile Odin (paid app) for the kernel flashing, makes it alot easier
