CM9

Need assistance on how to upgrade to the latest CM9 nightlies. I'm currently on CM9 nightlies(23 June) I want to update it to the latest build released today. Any links and how to's will be appreciated :)
 
Installed CM10 Prev3 last night...

From RocketRom V7 (I see V9 is out), I flashed AbyssNote, cleared davik cache and ran the CM10 ROM and then flashed the JB GAPPS. Not the cleanest way to do it, but worked ok. Didnt lose any settings / files or apps from RR7. There a couple of android errors directly after booting, and the AOSP keyboard just loop crashed the whole time (not a biggie, installed another). So far so good.... time will tell ;)

EDIT: GAPPS getting errors..... GMail stopped responding, email stopped responding ... damn

JB is just not ready

So after a few days running the JB ROM's I have decided to go back to rocketrom (v10 now :)) JB is going to be good for sure. But at this point there to many bugs for an every day use ROM.

Dislikes:
Bluetooth audio not playing via Bluetooth.
No way to create desktop folders.
Regular freezes

Likes:
Camera function is very nice, quick to take a pic.
Overall performance is smooth / quick

True. I struggled to keep it on my Note and eventually went back to CM9.
Got the S3 on Sunday and have stuck to CM10 as my daily driver. They seem you be giving a lot more attention to the S3 over the Note which is also making me rethink getting the Note 2 (which I have been dying to lay my hands on).
 
TBH... have not tried Kingdroid. I did try ParanoidDroid, but I had issues with it. RRv10 is appealing to me because its pretty much "Vanilla" ICS .... but its not...

While I'm at it... Anyone who wants to Flash ROMS, be it ICS to JB, JB to ICS, GB to ICS, GB to JB this is my failsafe procedure...

What I consider the "Holy Grail" of safe Kernels is AbyssNote Kernel 4.2. I use this baby all the time and has never failed me. So imo, get it, use it & love it!

1) Flash AbyssNote 4.2 from CWM
2) Wipe Data / Factory Reset
3) Wipe cache partition
4) (a) Flash Desired ROM
4) (b) Flash GAPPS (if necessary)
5) Advanced > Wipe Dalvik cache
6)Reboot

I've decided to wait for Note 2 but am just concerned about the data usage. My SO got his iPhone on Wednesday and it's used up over 35mb's in 2 days. With Onavo and deactiving all cellular data we've managed to get this down to kb's per day but it just feels useless to have a smartphone and not be able to use any features without checking your usage every halfhour.

We don't have wi-fi at home or at work so my question is, how much data do you use on Android with the Note? I basically want to do what I've been able to do with my BlackBerry (push emails, use news apps, WhatsApp, Google and access myUnisa if possible without having to constantly switch off cellular data). I really don't want to stay with BlackBerry...

I'm thinking of either taking the Smart Standard option with the 300MB when I can upgrade next month(or whenever Note2 arrives) or waiting out and cancelling my contract, get the phone through FNB and load data as needed.
Another question is what would be more beneficial, going prepaid or contract data-wise?

Androids are extremely flexible, but like all spartphones, they are data hogs. With all that freedom and flexibility I can only image that 300mb surviving an entire month WITH wifi. You will have to use your phone like a miser to get that rite. Based on my relatively normal usage, many many months into androids I can say with reasonable certainty that if you have absolutely no wifi access then your expectations should be set at a bare minimum of 1GB per month, their are users who consider 6GB standard for a month. For the normal usage of my phone I have 102 apps installed, that everything from weather widgets, to wahatsapp, email and social media apps, social media I actually use quite seldom as I am at a pc all day, but I have wifi both at work and at home, realistically I am off wifi maybe 36 hours a month and just on email, whatsapp and gtalk, odd facebook and twitter checking I will use 40-50mb and I have onavo extend as well which compresses by up to 80%, essentially that 40mb is 20% of what I would be using without it.

For your situation the prepaid FNB route may actually be the most cost effective, if I were in your situation I would either seriously consider ADSL at home, that will only cost around R520pm for an uncapped 1mb and with 2 smartphones in the house that's an absolute bargain, if that is not an option then the next best thing would be the mini 3G router from CellC which will give you 5GB per month for R699, not sure if they have it on a smaller package, its not listed on their site. Either pf those will save you a small fortune in data because 300mb is completely unrealistic in this day and age.

Also as a smartphone constantly turnign of cell data to save money, you may as well just get a dumbphone as that.s what your turning it into, phones these days are almost internet dependent, its paramount to being a basic function, mobile internet today is what sms was 3 years ago, you cannot own a smartphone and keep it disconnected. You may as well then stick with the soon to be dead blackberry.

Our service providers need to seriously reconsider what they call an acceptable data package, in america and Europe you would be lucky to find a data package bellow 1GB, its an illogical data package, its worthless, in this day and age you can use 100mb before finishing your morning coffee. Your buying a Samsung, a single software update is 700mb, and google is on an upgrade mission, they probably going to release 1-2 major versions a year.

I'm not sure what the correct terms are but we have two uncapped 4MB lines (barely getting 1MB)at R260 for both (hosted with extremely high filters) so wireless through that is not an option. But given the info you gave I now have the leverage I need to push for our own ADSL (hoping to get my hubby to start on that soon). Only headache with that is needing to sign up with Telkom for a line (not to mention installation fees and them taking their time) and getting a router (no idea what to look at). Have been looking at WebAfrica and Imaginet for the DSL line and data packages so far. Now just to get the bosses to change our 10gig cap to uncapped at work too:whistle:

I'm not prepared to risk signing the next two years with Blackberry. Am completely in love with the Note and checking for the newest updates on Note 2 every day..:love: so no turning back for me, gotta make a plan to make this work.

Now just to decide on going contract or prepaid route...

Not sure what that connection you have is, but if you access it over a lan cable then it is still possible to get it onto wifi, will check with a friend as I completely forget the name of the hardware, I know he paid about R300 for it. he had a wireless ISP, so antenna on the roof and internet into the house via lan cable. He had something similar to a router, 1 lan in and 4 out with wifi antenna.
