SHUTDOWN is in progress. Login failed for user 'xxxxxxx'. Only administrators may connect at this time.

WTF?? They just go and restart SQL server without informing us? I had 5 clients call me to ask me WTF is going on.

SQL Server is back online, BTW.

Hi ToxicWazte

Thank you for bringing this to our attention.

Please PM me your client code and I will investigate thoroughly as to why the SQL server was restarted.

Lol that does suck but 2 things... Firstly why are you displaying errors and secondly, if you are on a shared hosting environment restarts of services is something completely normal and they would never have to inform you when doing a service restart, that is crazy.

@James, of course they have to inform you, are you nuts?

I suspect that some automatic update system was re-configured to allow all critical updates through.

Legally.. they probably don't have to inform you. It is shared hosting after all, and I don't think there is any form of SLA in place.

But still.. service restarts and updates should be scheduled for the wee hours of the night, on weekends. You don't just restart a SQL Server on a Tuesday morning at 10:30am. And if it really is that necessary, I would appreciate an email notifying me of this, even if it only gives me a few hours to prepare for it.

Besides, what happened to all the claims of being so reliable, with redundancy, failover, backups, etc, etc. ??

It just makes WebAfrica look bad - like MTN Business.

Do you really think that a shared hosting provider will first inform all the clients on a server before restarting a service which needs to be restarted? That's ridiculous. If a problem is detected on one of our servers, and we discover that a service (http/mysql/exim whatever) needs to be restarted to fix the problem, we restart it immediately. It takes a few seconds at the most for a service to restart.

:wtf:

Not all SQL DBs are used to store cooking recipes & similarly trivial stuff.

:wtf: is about right...

A production SQL server doesn't get restarted for nothing... notifications go out etc etc etc...

I am not sure where you are going with that. If you have anything more than a trivial site and you are relying on shared hosting for your needs you are brave and service restarts, ftp hacking and exploits, over sold servers and various other things are to be expected.

That error looks like they probably did a recovery of some sort, having the DB startup as single-login only (for you to do a restore/repair)

With WA's track record of servers going down and breaking randomly (check out their notifications the their forum, there's a server down or broken almost every day now), I wouldn't really bother hosting with them at all, not even dedicated

This reminds me of the gaming site where I am. It's happened a bunch of times now that when trying to connect, I get a white screen with "the server is offline, please try again later" or something to that effect. It happened a bunch of times last month. Sometimes at night, but also often during the day... and no, it's not acceptable. The one time it was offline for over two hours...
