Hi I'd like to know if anyone has imported a oneplus device and their experience with doing so. Also heard from a rep that the oneplus 3 will not be using the invite system so buy now or wait?

Son visiting us with his. Not the greatest but better than any of our mid range phones.

I'd wait for the next OnePlus device, or buy another device. If something goes wrong you're in trouble, and there no major cost saving thanks to the terrible exchange.

I imported a OnePlus One within a month of its release. These were the costs:
- 64GB Sandstone Black model: $349
- Shipping from OnePlus to MyUS (mail forwarding service): $12
- Import duty: 14% of $300* = $42
- VAT: 14% of [($349+$42=$391) x 110% = $430.10] = $60.22
- DHL Express 3 day courier with insurance: $60

So $523.22 total, and DHL charged R200 for consignment. The exchange was R10.70 at the time if I remember correctly, so R5798.46 should have been the exact total cost to me.

The only way to lower your import cost is to deceive customs with the classification of your item and to use an uninsured and/or dodgy courier option. For a while after I got my phone, I read about other OPO importers classifying the device as a refurbished MP3 player and getting away with it. I also read about people getting caught and receiving huge fines.

* Chargers are exempt from import duty. I valued the OPO's charger at a fair value of $49, which is what they cost to replace from OnePlus.

I can't remember the exact breakdown and costs, but when I bought my Oneplus One last year March, it cost around R5500 to get it here, including shipping, customs, etc.

But I would rather look at one of the Nexus devices from Orange. The OPO has been working great for the last year, but if something does go wrong it is going to be extremely expensive to send it back to get it fixed.

I also purchased the Oneplus1 in Jan last year, I shipped it through Shipito in the US..

Great phone, design, specs, battery etc but the problem is repairs, spares etc.. I used the phone for a few weeks and the dropped it, which cracked the screen.. Oneplus wanted me to send back the phone for repairs which was working out to almost $300, the price of a new phone, so I scrapped it..

I also tried buying a replacement screen from China, paid around $50 but it was faulty and the supplier only returned about half of the money..

So far I have been lucky with no serious damage. But this is the reason why I won't be importing a phone by myself again. The risk is too great that you damage it and especially with the current exchange rate it is quite expensive to fix.

Better than midrange? The OP2 is an excellent flagship. The only downsides are the worse-than-OnePlus-One battery life and warranty difficulties.
