OpenView HD has SABC agreement

Ok so 3 of the channels will be SABC....

Colour me less impressed.

List of Channels so far :p

SABC1
SABC2
SABC3
eTV
eANC (Or whatever they call their news channel)
Al Jazeera
Channel O
Divine Truth
Kruiskyk TV

Most likely :P

Ag no, all jokes aside, I really hope they bring some good quality channels for the masses that cannot afford DSTV. Don't know why SABC needs to stick their finger in, they already broadcast their rubbish for free.

Well there goes the DSTV R29 bouquet and having to deal with DSTV's dodgy signal in bad weather conditions.

Hold on, if SABC is going on satellite for FREE why do we need to
a) Pay TV licenses
b) Do the whole DTT story?

I understand technically you still are supposed to pay a TV license for DSTV, TopTV etc, but will it be the same for this service?

If this is so much cheaper than DTT, will the SABC actually use DTT?

a) You need to pay a TV licence. Not a SABC licence.... A TV Licence also includes your radio fees.
b) They need to move over to DTT to better use the radio spectrum available. Eg. open spectrum for other services...

So if its a TV license, how much of the funds get spent anywhere except with the SABC? How much of those funds go in to spectrum, ect.?

None, Its a SABC license. It allows the ANC to broadcast propaganda at the expense of the public. The actual shows and so on could be ( and probably are) paid for out of advertising.

Madman88, I agree. I do not support the ANC nor the SABC. I am just trying to state facts.

Obviously the SABC is sub standard. Obviously I do not want to pay for a TV licence....

What if I use my computer monitor - do I still need a "TV" license?

Since DTT is mainly for public broadcast TV (i.e. SABC controlled), is the spectrum really needed if SABC and eTV are going satellite (which is cheaper for them)? The spectrum could all go to broadband services in this case. Analogue to satellite for TV in short.

I'm sure you can answer that on your own....

Good question, most newer monitors are coming with HDMI ports. The problem then is you're stuck watching TV on a small screen.

AS I understand it the current definition is that the device includes an analogue tuner, so it may be possible to ask for it to be removed when you buy it to not have to get the TV License, well, theoretically. I know if you send proof in that you removed it you can stop your license, how easy this is in practice I am not sure.

I wish they would just do it off the annual budget, would save so much money.

McGuywer It is not that straightforward, I believe if you have a DSTV decoder you need a TV License, even if you don't have a normal TV receiver. So, although you use a computer screen, you may still be liable for the TV License by virtue of being able to receive SABC TV via the service:(

I am wondering if anyone knows for sure how this will work.
