Hi skoenman,

We work based on how busy the network is at any given time. Generally, office hours downloads and similar are shaped (depending on which package and service level you take). After hours and on weekend, we try and unshape matters as far as possible, irrelevant of whether you have done 1GB or 1TB

We do NOT throttle.

MRBEep how does your shaping work??? do you guys have a rolling limit???or is it per protocol???

Urgh, having some issues with my email so I can't mail in. Will try and get it sorted so I can switch back to IS.

My torrents started picking up somewhere during the night (must have been after 2am because I was still up and they were crawling then) and predictably, at 12pm on the dot my torrents all take a nosedive again. Nothing over 2kbps.

Is it just me that is getting bad speeds today on my 1mbps line?

Download Speed: 66 kbps (8.3 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 54 kbps (6.8 KB/sec transfer rate)
Latency: 752 ms

When you guys are quiet, it usually means things are going really well!?

Have noticed the last half hour or so the speed has just bottomed out. But generally sorts itself out before too long.

But really bad at the moment, so can only assume its a network issue and that they are probably attending.

*Edit*
Has come right now :)

I am having a blast with the saix account. Speeds are really good. I don't do torrents though, only NNTP and it is flying. Gaming is great and video streaming is smooth even at 1080p. I am really happy and hope that things will stay this way.

I tried NNTP last week, but I have no idea where to even start with it. Downloaded a nzb program, but got lost when I started looking at News servers.

Any suggestions on which ones I should try out?

I'm with you on that hey!

I thoroughly recommend using Altbinz as the binary downloader. I get my nzbs from http://www.nzbsa.co.za/ and http://newshost.co.za/. If you are really desperate, http://binsearch.info/ tends to have the odd and rare files.

IS's news server is news.is.co.za, whereas Telkom's server is news.saix.net. IS seems to have around 6 days full speed retention, and files older than that come through at an average of 130kB/s. I've had no experience with the SAIX server. I SSL into my premium UK server when I need to max out my line... shoot me a PM and I can let you try it out for a bit.

Going to rather just request a move from this SAIX account. Performance on it is very erratic. Tonight I'm having major issues with videos simply not buffering and speeds are the pits.

Seems SAIX is not the replacement for VB that I was hoping for.

Local;

Four consecutive speedtests to four random International servers;

They were done in a row, no open applications or anything else taking up bandwidth on the network. No idea what to make of it.

Many international sites also take forever to open.

Bandwidth Issue

Hi MrBEEP,
hope I find you well, also hope you can assist or point me in the right direction.

I have for the last 3 weeks been struggling with my ADSL connection. I am on the 4mb OpenWeb Platinum package. My throughput however jumps from full speed to something reminiscent of the 4800 baud days.

When my problem started I logged a fault with Telkom who advised I they could not find anything wrong
and that I should contact my ISP. I contacted OpenWeb via the web form and had email reply that my account tested ok and I should contact Telkom again. (really awesome response times, thank you)

I logged a fault with Telkom again and had a technician on site, but he could not find anything at fault and advised I should contact my ISP again. I contacted OpenWeb again by email including SNR, Attenuation & speed tests, I was again informed to contact Telkom.

I again logged a fault the Faults rep at Telkom tested my line etc. but could not find anything wrong, advised I contact my ISP, but kept the ticket open.

From my side I have tried different DNS servers, routers, Computers & operating systems to rule out
Malware and/or Faulty hardware. Also checked on http://users.isdsl.net/ to confirm I am only one connecting.

Tonight I am unable to access my email or the web form as page times out. Traceroute and speed/ping tests below.

Have you tried another ISP to see whether it's your line or your current ISP? Perhaps get a test account from another ISP. I know Web Africa and Mweb offer test accounts.

Got moved back to IS, and my results are normal. Never thought I'd say this in my life, but I'm glad to be back on IS. :p

Anyone on VB having problems with accessing HTTP websites? Or shall I say more problems than usual.

I cannot access 90% of International websites at all, cannot download AMD drivers, etc.

Hi sammy7

Please drop me a mail so that I can move you off the VB network

Hi sammy7

Please drop me a mail so that I can move you off the VB network

Thx Mr Beep, but it seems the problem is solved. I've gotten used to this HTTP quirk of VB over a long time, but this time it just lasted longer (2 days).

Apart from that, I wouldn't trade VB for any other backbone that I've tried thus far :)

Thx
