Cape Town was terrible last night due to Telkom faults.

42 faults open in the Western Cape area alone.

Telkom left off many of our clients due to the faults experienced. It seems like they are slowly brining exchanges back up.

To check the status of your exchange, kindly give our friends at Telkom a ring on 10210

Hi Mr Beep,

My friend and I are both on the 2mb Gamers King package.

We're experiencing very high latency when playing Fifa14 on playstation network even though we're both situated in Cape Town. When we were both with Mweb the game always showed green bars for latency compared to the red single bar with Openweb???

We also have similar problems while playing Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3. I'm the only one showing high latency in an all South African lobby.

When I run speedtest I get good pings and download speeds both locally and internationally.

Please can you look into this as high gaming latency is not what your package promised. I suspect the problem may be because I'm routed through MTN Business when doing a tracert to www.mybroadband.co.za???

Thank you very much

Morning killa

The next time this happens, please post a tracert to www.openweb.co.za

This will reveal alot of info regarding the problem.

Telkom was very naughty last night

My ping is screwed mr beep, 400 local :( reboot router and blah blah.

Is there an issue?

Morning Friends,

Today will be a guaranteed BONUS unshaped evening.

Shaping will be lifted as follows on Wednesday 9 October 2013:

Gold - 17:30
Other service levels - 19:30

Normal shaping will resume at 8am on Thursday morning.

Happy downloading!

Like Zewp above, I also wanted to report that for the last few days I have had zero complaints about my OpenWeb service. Everything has been behaving swimmingly.

I don't know what was going on last week, but it was extremely frustrating. I just want to repeat my suggestion to OpenWeb that when there are problems, some background as to why would go a long way to alleviating customer concerns. My own frustration stemmed from simply being fed a new login and given no detail as to what was going on under the hood. You'll be amazed how patient a customer can be when they're given a little background to the problem. Just sayin'.

Browsing is crawling at the moment, especially Google services (Google docs / Gmail etc). Anyone else? And I'm using a temporary 10mb Platinum account too

Any known issues at the moment?

Update: Switched to a capped account for about an hour, now switched back and all seems to be ok again.. weird

2nd update: And back to crawling speeds all round 10 minutes later. This is getting highly annoying.

Was wondering what the issue was last night, high pings, reset router and the internet didn't come back, reset again, resolved. Pings where still highish on BF3 for local, +-80 - 120 .

I wouldn't necessarily call the Telkom blokes "friends". :erm:

Beep I really think you guys having an issue with your shaping policies , no matter what I do , HTTP , youtube , Torrents , NZB's etc its always about 35kbps .

I have no interest in doing torrents during the day and they could be shaped to 0kbps, as long as browsing was left unchanged, however if i can do torrent downloads during the day im sure there are plenty others and as a result browsing is slow when it shouldn't be.

However the gaming shaping has been spot on for the last few weeks with no ping issues during the day , awesome !

We are always working on ways to improve browsing during peak.

Downloads fall under its own category. Even HTTP downloads fall under this category, and will be shaped accordingly.

Browsing has its own category, which is never touched.

However, if the Download category is activated during peak shaping times (eg. A download is started) browsing automatically falls part of the download category on your account until the downloads have stopped.

oooh ok i was under the impression Http downloads were a different priority, thanks for clarifying.

What about streaming though, ie. if i have a youtube video loading will that then shape browsing as well until i stop streaming ?

Thanks for this info MrBEEP, now I finally understand why my accounts behave the way they do! :)

Underlined is good. Bold is bad.

Is there no way around this? At all??

What you're saying is that downloads will now take longer and browsing will therefore be impacted for a longer period too...

Do Windows Updates, AV updates etc form part of 'downloading'? These may happen unnoticed in the background, causing complaints of slow browsing.

Streaming has its own category.

We try and shape this last, and only if we absolutely HAVE to!

Software Updates has its own category. It is on a priority below streaming.

Is there a problem on the network. My speeds at home just dropped to dead slow. Can not download my mails. Seems to get better after 18:00.

Friends, I have an issue and need your help.

Recently upgraded from 1 Meg to 2 Meg with OW. Every alternate day my ping levels are high (sometimes closed to 500ms). When I mail OW, they say they are running well.. Check with Telkom.. Now, when I go to Telkom, they say line is working fine.. now what I am I to do????? FRUSTRATED!!!

The next time your latency increases please perform a tracert to www.openweb.co.za an post your results here.
