I've seen this posted so many times now that I decided to check it out. I clicked all over that site.

Still none the wiser as to what it actually is...:D

Hi MrBEEP,

Perhaps you can assist.

1: Got Gamers King, Downloaders Bling 4 meg account some time back, and everything worked awesome. I know of the daytime shaping, so no issue there.
2: One day account died, for whatever reason, and support was excellent to change account and up again. However, i started noticing this account to be heavily shaped, even on browsing during the day and working over Citrix from home. Downloads at night became unstable, with not being able to reach account speed.
3: I queried this with support and to cut a long story short, am on my 3rd change of account. The latest account started off fine, however it has reduced in performance as the others.

I have tested on another account to see if there was an issue with my line and have also checked with Telkom. I post 2 speedtest pics. The IS one is on the account i have with Openweb. the other with another ISP. You can notice the IS account is fairly good, but not at where it used to run. The other test is to show line speed. I then tested both accounts on my downloads, and the IS account ran between 150KB to 250 KB and fairly unstable dropping links and me having to reset certain downloads, whereas the other ran at line speed.

Could you suggest any solutions for me on this? Should i try another test, try telkom again? The downloads are important, but my main concern is that during working hours i battle to work from home on citrix as it times out etc.

Many thanks

Mr. Beep ... Not fighting .. Just saying
The whole essence of my discussion with you was that my experience is VERY similar to this guy,

At times the speeds are fine'- really, At other times not. But odd times.

I hear what you say that there is "something else"' at play, and all I am keen to find out is what is that something. The fact there are two people with the same issue makes it all the more curious.....

Not fighting with you ,,,so please don't give me a snot klap. Just asking.

Twitch is a problem, as previously discussed. Unfortunately, it is a problem on their side. ALL ISP's across the world are affected. There isn't much we can do. We have tried contacting them but never received more than an auto response. I would suggest you contact them on mass to have this resolved

Understandably twitch has been having a couple issues of late.
But the same thing was happening with Youtube last night. I've never had the issue of the video player not even loading, but I experienced the
same issue with Youtube and Twitch.
Everything, from browsing to downloading last night was horrendously slow, I skipped last night's session of Dota because it took so many tries
to eventually login, I didn't bother as I would've had a high ping in any case, if I managed to hold a stable connection with Steam server.
Things seem to be back to normal now but what happened last night? It seems to have affected more than just Openwebbers, makes me think
it's Telkom.

Personal details? *Blushes* Okay MrBeep but....but only for you http://www.okcupid.com/profile/Basjohn

More seriously though, pretttttty clear this is hitting everyone. Browsing/Youtube/Facebookerface is horrendous during the day and then suddenly decent at night, yet isn't the shaping supposed to prevent that exact problem? I don't mind shaping, I just mind it not having the positive side-affect.

Now I don't want to add to the heated discussion, but I am also experiencing the exact same problems with regards to browsing, some sites takes longer to load than dial-up back in the days.

But, it would be very nice for better or worse to openly discuss the issues found so that we can get a better understanding etc.

That is my personal opinion.

MANY OW users have experienced this at some point. Usual suggestions are to reset port with Telkom or to get new account details from OW.

I haven't seen any explanation of the problem or any attempt to prevent it from recurring...

It seems everyone who's replied would prefer a transparent discussion about the problems, opposed to PM/email.

So I think we are now waiting.

If nothing comes of it, I suggest we create a thread where we can all discuss it - with or withour MrBEEP.

He's pretty cagey about what exactly is going on, even in PM/email. I generally get new account details (I'm on at least my third set of credentials this year), after which the account works again but I'm left none the wiser as to wtf actually was wrong with the thing in the first place...

I've been with OW for a while and am happy to remain here, even if I have to change credentials every 3 months. If the discussion were open and frank and it emerged their system was broken and accounts gradually slow down, then fine. OK. Just let me know when I need new credentials and we can work around the problem. I'm having to work around it anyway but with guess work as to when exactly I need new creds. Taking the guess work out of it would make things work better for everyone...

/tinfoil/ Unless of course, the account slow downs are an attempt at squeezing extra capacity out of the network from unsuspecting users...

Unfortunately it is being suggested that there is a big conspiracy happening, which is simply not the case.

Herewith my official statement as requested:

1. Shaping is based on how busy the network is at any given time
2. ALL heavy protocols will be shaped during peak, and will be slow if the network is busy
3. Browsing is unshaped, until you start any form of download during peak. You will then be shaped on browsing.
4. After Hours we try and offer an unshaped experience as uch as possible
5. If you are not downloading during peak (not even torrent seeding) and are experiencing a problem with browsing, kindly email [email protected] so that it can be resolved.

Re - Squeezing extra capacity out of our IPC:

False. Our network partner upgraded the capacity by a massive amount on 1 October 2013. We never oversell. We upgrade.

Morning MrBEEP,

Mind me asking, it has been mentioned many times before: "Browsing is unshaped, until you start any form of download during peak. You will then be shaped on browsing." When you stop all downloads, whether torrents, http etc... how long will it take before your browsing is unshaped again? Or how do you account for it.

The system runs a script every hour or so to check for changes. If it picks up downloads have stopped it will unshape browsing again.

Great news MrBEEP, but how then do i account for my drop in usable experience? If i may suggest that all things remain equal from when i rejoined OW, how does the experience diminish over time? For example, going from near line speed downloads to half to two thirds at best?

3. Browsing is unshaped, until you start any form of download during peak. You will then be shaped on browsing.

What does your system consider "downloading" during browsing? You are technically always downloading while you browse the internet.

  1. Is downloading drivers considered downloading?
  2. Is streaming a TED talk considered downloading?
  3. What about downloading a bunch of email attachments?
  4. How about downloading the latest Zend Framework?
  5. Visiting the mybroadband forums and reading these posts and all the images, is that downloading?
  6. If I spam ctrl+f5 on a image heavy site, is that downloading?

What is considered "downloading" during peak hours? Can I hazard a guess that if you download more than xx MBs in an hourly period, you'll find yourself shaped?

You said you have a script that checks every hour or so to determine if you are shaped or not. So the above seems plausible.

Surely this is a fine line between shaping and throttling?

I'm not against this, in fact I can browse reasonably well while I download. But how different is the above from throttling really?
