@Beep how about some love for us trying to download from Micro$oft, for the life of me cant get my 8.1 ISO going faster than 150kbs on my 6MB line. ;)

You can download during peak, we don't mind. However, if you do, browsing too will be shaped.

Folks abuse unshaped browsing by bypassing our shaping and tunneling their traffic over the browsing packets. This is abuse.

Anything that in common sense would constitute downloading, is considered downloading.

A 2Mbps email attachment is not downloading, but a 40MB one is.

We are very reasonable.

Also, it is critically important to remember that this rule is only in place during peak. Not during off peak, and weekends, which makes up around 60% of any given month. (In other words, when the network is not abnormally busy, around 60% of a month is generally unshaped).

What is considered "downloading" during peak hours? Can I hazard a guess that if you download more than xx MBs in an hourly period, you'll find yourself shaped?

You said you have a script that checks every hour or so to determine if you are shaped or not. So the above seems plausible.

If we unleash the Microsoft Updates, we might have a repeat of the Apple update scenario. We reaaallllyy do not want a repeat of this.

We will unleash these after around 19:00 tonight and for the entire weekend, meaning they will probably clear by Monday

Where can one get the Windows 8.1 ISO update? This will save ISP's from having to contend with users who have more than one Win 8 PC downloading the same update multiple times.

There is no "standalone update" yet or I cant find it, been looking since yesterday As I have 8 machines to update, I think this is more of a upgrade than an update as the size is roughly the same(update vs upgrade) hopefully I can get the relevant copies from my supplier. Just would have loved to do the upgrade over the weekend.

I'm very happy with this approach. Infinitely better than Mweb's approach where they say "because 0.01% of users bypass shaping on P2P protocols by going through http, we will just throttle the top 3% of users because we can't identify the 0.01%". OW way is so simple and nearly abuse proof. Why I moved over to OW.

Thanks again for the replies. It's just frustrating to have to work around whatever these issues are, on a ~monthly basis...

This month has been much better than the past two- that increased IPC must be doing us some good :)

I'll refrain from harping on about this whole OW Accounts issue until my account next decides to quit.

Whatever account/backbone etc I'm on now, it's working well :)

Basically the same as what I am doing now, I have a MS sub so I can & am busy downloading the ISO from MS but it's going very slowly, had several failed downloads since the release yesterday & this morning. Usually if it was a update or a SP it would be around 1GB but the update to 8.1 seems like a rewrite hence the size.
My issue is not getting the update/ISO but the rate i am getting it.
 
Can we get some more prioritising on Steam and Team Viewer. I cant even open steam and team viewer only accepts LAN connections. Using my free 1gb Afrihost to post :P

The steam thing is unlikely to happen...pretty sure the auth traffic looks similar to the downloads.
 
Gaming is a priority though, if you cant open steam you cant play Dota :O
 
well I got a hold of support@openweb .co.za as MrBEEP suggested. After a lengthy email the only suggestion I got was "did you reset your port" and "You are subscribed to a shaped product yes. Shaping will take place during busy network periods." this is totally unacceptable. please fix my issue. How can I be shaped if I have had the account for four days? (1mb line)

there is no transparency in the replies both from MrPEEB and from support....just tell us...yes we are having problems and are looking into it, at least then, we know that something is up and will wait through it. Right now I feel like I have been scammed into some bull**** marketing scheme into buying a product that does not work.
 
What ow don't seem to get is browsing Gmail or any other international sites during the day is not downloading in terms of pulling a movie or series.

It's very simple. During the day you can't access international sites and you go from a 10mb account to half a meg

Now you want to tell me that Is is not intentional? Upload stays at just under a meg.
If people are downloading during the day fine. There them
But it's almost impossible to even access Gmail.
Conspiracy? No just plain and simple throttling or degrading of the accounts
