I read the last two days comments, looks like it's not just me that have been experiencing heavy shaping, it's ok I guess it turns back to normal around 19:00 ish. Just miss the good old days.
 
4Mbps Uncapped Standard.

Test conducted on 2/26/2013 2:50:37 PM

Download Speed: 767 kbps (95.9 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 428 kbps (53.5 KB/sec transfer rate)
Latency: 35 ms

The trial account never performed like this :(

If Torrents are too slow, there is a service that downloads torrents for you at very fast speeds and then you just ftp it to your computer. I haven't used it for a while, but it works quite well, especially if you are experiencing severe shaping.

Downstorm has pathetic amounts of storage though. Zbigz.com is where it's at.
 
it would be be so simple for mrbeep to say. we shape these accounts: XXXX from: YYY to UUU on the following protocols: IIII PPP by WW% MON to FRI.

then you know what to expect. now they dont say it and then im perturbed when i see 9KB/s on my NNTP during the day.
 
I think something else is at play at the moment. I'm barely managing 230k/sec on NNTP on a 10mbps Silver package, music streaming is choppy and keeps cutting off and browsing is patchy too.

If you go back a couple of pages you'll see there was recently a problem affecting the WC which was sorted out. When that happened, my account was flying - but it has since degraded and today is the worst yet.

Maybe you don't 'get' shaping. Shaping adjusts the network performance depending on the network conditions at the time. It is not fixed. It is responsive/dynamic/variable. If 100 people suddenly start downloading on FTP, then FTP will probably be shaped so that browsing or email aren't affected.

There is no way for Mr Beep to to know when the shaping will start and what it will affect.

Having said that though, there is probably more shaping of the lower priority protocols (which would probably include p2p/torrents) during the day. All ISPs do this to maximise other protocols which are more likely to be used. As far back as I can remember, these protocols have been shaped or throttled, especially during the business day. Unless you are paying for an unshaped account, you should expect shaping (and therefore no guarantee of any specific speed).

You rightly say, earlier, that additional expense is involved - that is exactly what you are paying for - reduced/no shaping. That's why an OpenWeb Gold account costs more - there is less (but not no) shaping - and even those accounts would presumably be shaped at times.
 
Poor speeds in Cape Town on a silver uncapped 8mbps account, getting <2.5mbps on local speedtests. Seems like quite a serious issue. Seems all protocols are slow (although nntp is slower than others)
 
this is like dejavu. Been trying to get to the bottom of this for a while now.

New permanent 4M uncapped unshaped Gold NNTP jumps between 250KBps en 320KBps. Yesterday was bit better later on in the day. Seeing it is not a shaped account, is it then contention ratio's kicking in?

1M uncapped silver NNTP avg. 9 to 12 KBps. but will jump to full line speed at 5 at least. Different line and location.
same as most reports here.

If that is what a silver account is shaped to, then I pity the lower packages. I kind of hope that it is a Western cape issue. At least that can be fixed.

Update: hovering just above 200KBps on 4M unshaped gold for a while now

NNTP slowly creeping upwards. I think she is getting ready for warp speed at 5. Come on Scotty. We need more power.
 
Yes I know. But it is sad that I get excited about a 3KB increase, up to 15 now from 12 with spikes to 19
 
Hey Friends

There does seem to be an issue in Western Cape. We have notified network engineers.

Things should start looking better when the network quietens down between 17:00 and 18:30.
 
@MrBeep does this issue include PPP disconnects? My DSL is fine but I'm loosing my IP and having to wait a few minutes to re-establish. Happened too many times today already.
 
5 o'clock and 4 m gold unshaped jump immediately to full line speed. strange "shaped" unshaped account.

1 meg silver still stuck.

30 seconds later full line speed on silver asswell
