OpenWeb ADSL Feedback Thread

New OpenWeb customer here.

I have a 4Mbps Gold Uncapped Unshaped account.

Not too happy with the performance of my paid account vs the trial account I tried a month ago.

speedtest.net measurements show I'm getting full performance over local connections: Download Speed is ~4Mbps, Upload speeds are ~0.6 Mbps.

So the problem is not with my ADSL line.

When I'm doing HTTP downloads I'm struggling to get more than ~1Mbps downloads:

tau:~ $ wget -c http://www.7degrees.co.za/pub/FreeBSD-9.1-RELEASE-amd64-bootonly.iso

101KB/s

However, when I attempt the same download over SSH I'm getting full line utilization:

tau:~ $ scp www.7degrees.co.za:/www/pub/FreeBSD-9.1-RELEASE-amd64-bootonly.iso

393.3KB/s

This indicates to me one of two alternatives:

1) OpenWeb are shaping HTTP traffic.

2) OpenWeb have a serious configuration issue.

I've cc-ed this message to support@openweb.

A traceroute to www.openweb.co.za looks like this:

Which account did you buy?

My standard uncapped running full speed on nttp here.

All the new customers having problems???

Not me. I signed up for the Easter Weekend special and its been running great.

All i want to know is...... How do i measure usage with OW. Is there some sort of measuring tool on their website that I am missing.

I want to determine my value at the end of each month

OW doesn't believe in monitoring any usage, otherwise it wouldn't really be uncapped now would it ? ;)

BUT, you can use a free utility like Networx (http://www.softperfect.com/products/networx/) to monitor your own usage. :)

signed up yesterday , no problems , standard uncapped super edition

weird that standard is working fine, but Silver not.

My current FTP download (local site on MTN) is coming down at 6.5KB/s on a 2Mbps line. This is every day, have already mailed support twice. While I'm writing this the speed bursts up to 30KB/s, then suddenly 120KB/s for a few mins, then slowly back down to 10 again.. this is how its been all week.

Thanks mate, appreciate it.

Gold Uncapped at R229 for Easter Special has been a bargain. Although I feel for existing customers who didn't benefit from the reduced fee as there were restrictions.

Some of the international links are very slow today.

My Broadband speed test works for Local:
Test conducted on 05 April 2013 12:45:29 PM
Download Speed: 1603 kbps (200.4 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 343 kbps (42.9 KB/sec transfer rate)
Latency: 52 ms
but International gives a ping of 208 and then hangs on 'Preparing Download Test'

It has taken me 2 minutes just to load http://www.speedtest.net/
Then I get 'Configuration Load Failed'

Facebook loads fine though?

If it's an IS based account you can use the IS usage site: http://users.isdsl.net/

I'm on Gold. I had a usage stats graph on my ClientZone. Support gave me a new account due to issues, this one didn't have the usage graph. I emailed back saying I want one, got one in 10 minutes thanks to Leon.

Just ask maybe?

Tx MrBEEP, support sorted me out - line is _flying_ now!

Please can I ask what they did, or what do I ask for when I email them again? My symptoms are the same as yours....

QUestion for MrBeep: Seeing that these problems seem to be affecting mostly new subscribers, could it be anything to do with the "buy one get one free" deal? Could IS be enforcing a 2Mbps total over both accounts? This could explain why speeds are so erratic
if one account is running at max speed, it would leave little bandwidth for the other at that time?
