We sell various products on different IS platforms. Without needing to go into details, we do not simply resell the stock standard products IS have. We are able to create our own product baskets.

Last night the network was very busy due to the new content that was released. Everyone was downloading. However, based on our tests, last night was the first night in a very long time where torrents did not run at full speed. As the content is downloaded, speeds will once again normalize.

Shaping is based on your contention ratio, and how busy the network is at any given time. Gold has a lower contention ratio, thus will achieve better speeds. I am afraid that torrents do not get any priority on any of our services, except on Platinum where all is treated equally. Torrents drain networks, and will mean the rest of the userbase will have very little to no access if we allow priority on this protocol.

Maybe someone can enlighten me but if Openweb is an IS reseller, then why is it that the other resellers dont have Vanilla or Standard or Gold packages Like Openweb.

The standard seems that the other resellers (WebAfrica, Buzybuy) only offer 1 uncapped product with no variation.

I only ask because I see guys on the Gold packages complaining about being shaped badly during business hours, I would think that they would be shaped less having paid a premium price for their Gold product. Surely Gold packages should be shaped less than Standard for instance.

I must also add that during our unshaped times (when the network is not busy) all traffic is treated equally.

Generally the following applies:

Platinum and Gold:
* Takes priority on our unshaping policy
* Will be unshaped for longer during quiet periods
* Will feel less effect during an outage such as Seacom or Telkom
* Takes priority on our backup links

It is not just about getting full speed downloads 24 / 7. Unfortunately we cannot promise this, and never have. It is not viable until the IPC cost is lowered by Telkom.

Is anyone else having trouble sending mail via smtp.openweb.co.za? I can't send mail on either of my two openweb accounts, but I can send on my mweb account

This happened 2 days ago. Mine works now though.

Hi Gareth

We have a 3rd SMTP server available that is hosted in a different datacentre.

Please PM me for the details

Is anyone else having trouble sending mail via smtp.openweb.co.za? I can't send mail on either of my two openweb accounts, but I can send on my mweb account

Hmmm... looks like it's working again now.

Okay, I've figured it out.

I wasn't using smtp.openweb.co.za like I thought I was :o I was actually using smtp.isdsl.net, which seems to use several different IP addresses. Two of those IPs, 196.26.208.200 (smtp02.isdsl.net) and 196.26.208.195 (smtp03.isdsl.net), don't appear to be sending mail today.

Code:
fsck#host smtp.openweb.co.za
smtp.openweb.co.za is an alias for smtp.isdsl.net.
smtp.isdsl.net has address 196.26.208.197
smtp.isdsl.net has address 196.26.208.199
smtp.isdsl.net has address 196.23.28.231
smtp.isdsl.net has address 196.23.28.232
smtp.isdsl.net has address 196.26.208.190
smtp.isdsl.net has address 196.26.208.193

those two servers you mentioned are not currently active as they are down for maintenance, but it should never be an issue as long as you use the hostname 'smtp.isdsl.net' or 'smtp.openweb.co.za'

Thanks for the information MrBEEP.

Hi Keoma

Its not a criticism - as i said, i do expect some shaping.

Can you elaborate further for me - in the case where shaping is occurring, what factors influence what an account is shaped to? i.e. is it based on prior usage, line speed, protocol? Or are all NNTP downloads shaped down to xx kbps?

This may be a little too specific but does anyone else play Guild Wars 2 during the day on 1Mb standard uncapped? When there's a lot of activity I can get several minutes of lag, despite bandwidth usage remaining relatively low, and I eventually get disconnected.

OW support wants me to ask Telkom to recreate my port, which I'm in the process of doing, but I am skeptical because outside gaming, everything is going swimmingly - 100kB/s from usenet, youtube, etc - and nobody can seem to tell me if this is just what I should expect during the day or if gaming should perform better.

So, anyone else play during weekdays? If you're on 2 or even 4 Mb standard your personal experiences could be helpful too.

Thanks

I have tried to play it even during the evening and the lag is just way to high to even play, so kind of given up on that for now.

Maybe it's because seacom is still being repaired and the latency is because of all the rerouting the lines are taking? I dunno, all i know is most online games are becoming very difficult to play. Even local Chivalry games the latency is 300+, with war fighter i get around 180 which is fine for that game, so been playing that mostly, planet side 2 has similar latency issues as guild wars 2 for me.

Thanks, that's helpful. It's usually ok in the evening but does vary quite frustratingly, particularly in WvW. I guess the wait for decent internet in SA continues.

I've been avoiding GW2 for the past month or so due to really bad performance on my OW account. Thought it was my line, but some people over on the NAG forums also complained so it must be a lot more widespread then.

Accounts are not shaped, that is, individuals are not shaped. Protocols are shaped, according to (presumably) rules that apply to account *types* (Gold, Silver, Standard, etc).

And it has been repeatedly stated that the shaping is dynamic. In other word, it changes from minute to minute depending on the loads on the network. So trying to get info about how NNTP might be shaped next Tuesday at 9pm if you have already downloaded 12TB this week is pointless.

When can we expect an improvement in the shaping? surely if you know when the network will be congested you can make a plan?
