Special edition 10mb running like a rock star, or should I say performing like a rock star and running like a Usain Bolt??

Get solid 4-5 mb during office hours and 9-10mb after hours.

How are you guys doing today?

Cold, cold day in Durbs but my 1mbs Vanilla Uncapped is flying although I'm not downloading, just browsing and the odd YouTube video here and there :)

For the first time in about 2 months my account is performing great during the day. Hope it stays this way - tired of extremely slow speeds during the day. After 5pm it always performs well.

well my line has been running great. ATM I dont have anything left to download so my line is sitting idle (waiting for the new suits, GOT, Bones, Arrow etc).:p Thanks mrBEEP, epic service.

Accounts are not shaped, that is, individuals are not shaped. Protocols are shaped, according to (presumably) rules that apply to account *types* (Gold, Silver, Standard, etc).

And it has been repeatedly stated that the shaping is dynamic. In other word, it changes from minute to minute depending on the loads on the network. So trying to get info about how NNTP might be shaped next Tuesday at 9pm if you have already downloaded 12TB this week is pointless.

Thanks for answering some of my questions (even though I find the tone of your response dismissive).

I also presume shaping is done based on account types (silver, gold, etc), but I'd imagine account speed (1mbit, 2mbit, etc) and usage are factored too.

I'm not asking "if i use 12gb, how will I be shaped?" - I'm asking "If I've used 0gb, and another user has used 120gb, are we shaped differently?" - assuming we're on a like-for-like account (or does that not matter).

I understand 100% the definition of dynamic - I'm asking what variables are considered in the algorithm that determines the shaping.

Lame! Wanted to sign up today for the 1mb Gold special at R229pm.. Checked earlier this morning and it was still on. Now when I've got everything ready to do it, I see it's been taken down and replaced with some silly silver specials..

That just changed things for me, R100pm more now for being a few minutes (literally) too slow! Was sold but I guess i'm still open to other isp's then..

Hi Mr Beep

Sent you a PM if you can look into that for me if you get a chance :)

My OpenWeb 2Mbps Gold account is currently struggling, not even getting 5KB/s from the IS News Server. What's up? I'm in JHB region.

Unless you have a Gold Unshaped Uncapped, I'd say you just being shaped. Just because you have gold doesn't mean u not going to get shaped in the day. I am also a Gold account user but of the shaped kind, so I assume the network is just busy

Yep, can confirm the same as stated below.
Please, please lets carry on this way.

Firstly you should get yourself a decent paid news server if you want to have reliable download speeds. Secondly, unless you have an unshaped account NNTP will be shaped during business hours, probably less if you had a proper news server subscription though.

PM mrBEEP. Maybe he can still "hook you up"

Hi There,

My NNTP is running fine and i'm on the same package.
Check which exchange you're breaking out on. Their might be an issue on the rosebank one. I'm breaking out Durban Central and it's working :)

Try connecting using SSL (Port 443) - Definitely improves daytime speeds for me on the odd occasion that I use NNTP during the day

Shockingly slow http download speeds today on both my 4mbps gold unshaped accounts. Youtube is watchable, speedtest.net shows full line speed, but try download a file via http and you're screwed.

Hi GarethY

I have tested both your account and HTTP is downloading at pretty much full speed.

Kindly have Telkom recreate your ports, then switch off both routers for 10 minutes and provide feedback.

I don't think it matters. As I understand it (and maybe Mr Beep can confirm) it looks at what is happening on the network and then, within the account type (and yes, presumably line/account speed), it adjusts the various protocols to effectively prioritise the "light" ones (http, email) and de-prioritise the "heavier" ones (NNTP, P2P, FTP, etc). But importantly, everyone within the same account type and line/account speed (all else being equal) would experience the same amount of shaping regardless of their previous usage.

Apologies if my reply came across as dismissive.

I've tried it with one line so far, but no improvement. I'd actually say it's worse now. Telkom say the line is syncing at 4mbps. I'll try the other one now...
