MrBEEP; I must say; since joining you guys - even using the trial account, I have been very happy with your speeds etc.
Obviously, I have been nailing my line since joining but that has stopped and I am just happy with the speeds.
If I am not going my full line speed, I'm getting half and that's all I want.
Be it on NZB's (local) or international downloads (normal stuff) - Youtube etc.
Please keep it up!

Ya I agree, Openweb speeds were fantastic when I had my trial account. Can't wait to see the back of Mweb at the end of September

Hi Fieldy,

There are no issues on the network currently.

Kindly PM me with your ADSL username and the full name and surname of the registered client so that I can look into this for you.

I just ran a speedtest on my 4 meg uncapped openweb account. It is abysmal and I haven't used more than 10GB on it in August.

Took me 8 minutes to log into gmail so I could email their support department. I need to find another ISP.

Goodmorning,

I have still not received a PM from yourself. Kindly forward me a PM so that I can investigate

MrBeep (or anyone else who has a view),

I am currently on the Gamer's King package, on a 1 Mb line. While I have absolutely nothing bad to say about the line speeds for downloads, general surfing and online gaming generally, the reason I went for this package in particular is because, like most people, I play online in the evenings, the same time my gf facebooks, youtubes and pinterests (and whatever else girls are into these days). Even if she is just browsing her favourite relationship and cooking blogs, I get huge ping spikes while playing online and so for the entire time she's online, I can't really enjoy any game. She contributes to the cost of the internet so I can't well tell her she can't use it.

I have asked about QOS on my router and trying all sorts of ways to get around this but nothing is working. The router I bought is in excess of R2 500 as I used to only be able to use 3g and needed a quality router to boost the signal. I don't want to have to buy another.

What is the best and most cost effective way to sort this out? Because right now only one of us can really enjoy the use of the internet which defeats the purpose entirely.

Thanks in advance.

Right there with you MossySloth, peak gaming time is unfortunately also peak surfing time, peak skypeing time and peak YouTube time.

I think it's very easy to saturate a 1Mb line and even having 2 might allow more traffic to get through, but who knows.

Another option I've considered might be to upgrade to a 2Mb line but have 2x 1Mb accounts. One to which you connect directly for gaming, with another one being the default used for everything else. For that you need a router that supports PPPoE bridging though (iirc) but at R2500 it should have that.

Maybe a boost in line speed would help?

since its a joint effort just convince her to upgrade. 4mb would do nicely.

Same problem here. QoS also didnt work for me, so i took a different route. I split the account in two. If im playing game/working i can use the full 1Mb/s. If my wife is browsing/watching Youtube she only gets 512Kb/s down 128kb/s up. With this setup pings stay low even with me using mumble while gaming.. I am using a Mikrotik router to do this, and just using my DSL router as a pass-through device.

What do you mean by split?

Well this sounds like something I'd be pretty keen on. Are there any guides to set this up. Being a complete noob, I have no idea how one goes about "using my DSL router as a pass through". Any pointers?

I rate limit my wife's laptop's IP address. 512/128. My PC does not have any limit set, so if she is not using the internet i get full 1Mb/s, if she is maxing her limit, i get 512kb/s as well. Fair share with perks. ;)

I tried QoS but it was a pain to do right and to maintain for home use.

Like I said, i use a Mikrotik to do this, mostly because im very familiar with them. If you check on your current router under the QoS settings most of the time, it might give you the option to rate limit a internal IP address. If it does, great, if it doesn't, you will need to look at a 3rd party firewall/router that can do it, like Mikrotik, dd-wrt, pfsense...

Erm.. I really don't know off hand about any general guides or How-To's really. Mikrotik has a How-To on configuring for a dsl line here:
http://wiki.mikrotik.com/wiki/How_to_Connect_your_Home_Network_to_xDSL_Line

Maybe someone else has another way of getting the same result on different hardware?

(Dang.. I sound like a Mikrotik sales man.. ;) .... which im not :) )

What router do you have MossySloth? If you're feeling brave you could see if OpenWRT is available for it on http://wiki.openwrt.org/toh/start. I'd recommend you have a backup router and a way to flash back to stock should things go wrong though.

Should you go that route, there's info on traffic control here: http://wiki.openwrt.org/doc/howto/packet.scheduler/packet.scheduler

I have a Duxbury Dux412 3g job. I must say, considering how much it cost at the time, I have been disappointed with the 'user-friendliness' of the thing. But it does the job I bought it for which was to be a 3g router which a bit of a signal boost as well as a wireless adsl router. I have tried to do the whole QOS thing but apparently its not available and I've had no luck trying to fix IP's, forward ports, and so on. The gf also uses her work laptop so its difficult installing unknown programmes on that machine as well. I'll have a look at the above and see what I can decipher - as I said though, I'm a bit of a dullard when it comes to all the settings and stuff.

Thanks.
