Like many of the guys above me i cant connect to any web page, speedtest.net times out before i can run any test.

I phoned the help desk yesterday at 15:50 and they said a technician would look into my issue and phone me right back, still no reply back and my connection is still very slow, or rather non existent.

Hello

So sorry to hear that.

I have had the senior engineers play 2 hours of gaming this morning on a 1Mbps to 4Mbps Gamers King this morning and can confirm that latency is superb.

Shaping seems to be doing its job on downloads.

Good luck with your new ISP. We do hope to welcome you back soon, as it is tough out there currently.

i've sent my cancellation forms in moving away from openweb. why can i not play games during the day on a gamers king account? Openweb reason - shaping (then why call it a gamers king account) had enough

Openweb's Crappy Shaping

Leon Witherall said:
It is peak shaping time currently, thus shaping will be enforced on heavy protocols.

Shaping is in effect during busy periods. When the network quietens down, we generally tend to unshape the connection completely. We always advise clients to download in the evenings and on the weekend.

We expect things to quieten down at around 18:00 to 19:00 for an evening of download fun.

I have to ask, what is this nonsense from Openweb?! For almost R200 per month I am only allowed to utilize downloads on Saturday and Sunday and after 7pm?!

I'm on a 1mbps line, and constantly get download speeds of 10-20kb/s, and about 0.0 kb/s (0.1kb/s if I'm lucky) on torrents. Things speed up on the weekends, so this means I can only get proper speeds 30% of the week!

I am on the Gamers King (Downloaders Bling) which I was told is based on the Gold profile. Unless Uncapped Gold is the biggest piece of crap, or I have been lied to. This is by far the worst service I have had from Openweb.

Hello,

I am so sorry you are upset.

However, this is not true.

Out latest stats reveal that around 60% of any given month is completely unshaped, especially on Gold.

I understand that you might be upset due to daytime shaping, but, alas, as explained before, kindly direct that anger towards Telkom.

We are asking for a 50% decrease in IPC wholesale costs. I believe most ISP's are asking for this.

This will allow the ISP's to decrease shaping drastically during peak times, which I believe is where your problem is.

I invite you to PM me so that I can test your account myself, and see if there is perhaps another problem at play here.

Still better than Telkom Internet. Off peak time is midnight to 6AM. so 25% of the time you can download torrents. The rest of the time you are screwed.

Still better than AH and Telkom and Mweb.

This is nonsense that you can only download on weekends. I have a 1Mbps gold and it works at full speed every night from like 18:30 until the morning.

Get capped if you want unshaped, as this is the only true unshaped you can buy

Before the guys at Openweb reset my port, and gave me another account, and whatever else they did, I had an account that downloaded at around 70-100kb/s and torrents downloaded at around 50-80kb/s.

Once they gave me the new account it ran beautifully for just under a week. Today, and this entire week, its gotten worse than my old.

How can normal shaping be 10-20kb/s and torrents 0kb/s?! I'm sure that other people on the same account as me are getting much better speeds.

I don't know what further testing of my account would do, as its been done and I was told everything is "normal". I'd want my download speeds to be checked against other users with the same account.

Its only fair if everybody paying for the same account at the same price get the same service! My previous Gamers King account and my current Gamers King are totally different!

Did you just provide me with some random account, or is it genuinely a Gamers King account?! :/

Edit: This is during peak times. Off-peak I get 100-120kb/s download and 90-110kb/s on torrents

gamers is standard uncapped during the day and 'gold' after hours. those speeds are normal for standard uncapped while shaping is applied. other protocols should be unaffected though. i had standard, now on gamers.

Is this KB/s or kb/s ?

I await your PM

My thread seems to be have been moved , anyway with telkoms line speed adjustments in november is there going to be any changes to your prices after that ?

OpenWeb FTW

+1. Ive been with OW, my first and most likely only ISP since June. I'm very happy, i've got a 1Mbps Gamers Kings account, and other than some issues from our "friends" at telkom, the line has been awesome.

I use it mostly after hours in the week (17:00-06:00) and weekends pretty much 24/7 with either downloads or gaming.

Pings in Black Ops II for example never go over 50 in public games. Downloads depending on location pretty much runs at line capacity.

Wish i can pay that extra little bit for a 2Mbps line

Sometimes people amaze me, they'll have a 1 or 2 Mbps line and try and make a backup of the internet, watch youtube, check gmail & run a windows update all at the same time at say 13:00 in the afternoon in the week, then turn around and say the product is bad.

Know what your product is capable of, and when, where and how you can utilize it best, I get the most out of my line, cause I use it the way it was intended, gaming and after hours download.

YAY FOR OPENWEB

Thanks for all the info on how shaping works on the previous pages Beep , now that i understand how to properly use the account, its much better during the day !

Hi MrBeep

I have emailed support, my internet stopped working around 10pm last night, ADSL light is still on but no internet.
I phoned Telkom they said there side is fine.

Just letting you know

Thanks

Had the same issue last night. Not one of my other accounts was able to connect either. This after switching router off for 30 min, leaving it on for 20 min, restarting, switching accounts .... and turn off modem for the night

Was still stuffed this morning when I switched modem back on. Everything started working again during the morning, so came to conclusion maybe Telkom might be behind something again, who knows?

So i'm able to browse but streaming is a disaster & torrents at the moment are running at 7 kB/s. Understand shaping is in effect but that drastic on a 2mb line?

Not sure of the answer @flashfire208, maybe MrBeep can clarify, but in my mind, you'll will sync at the upgraded speed, but if you are using 1Mbps from ISP you'll still only be using a 1Mbps.

Can someone elabirate what is ment by network freeze?

Owing to a planned network freeze over the December 2013/January 2014 period the upgrade process will be paused and will resume thereafter.

Thanks for all the info on how shaping works on the previous pages Beep , now that i understand how to properly use the account, its much better during the day !

WARNING - GAMERS KING ACCOUNTS - ITS A AFTER HOURS ACCOUNT ONLY

BEWARE - These accounts are so shaped during the day, that it is impossible to open a webpage or download e-mail.
Time to open www.sharenet.co.za, 8min30sec (no downloads running). World of warcraft is stuck on the loading screen. Their claim of unshaped gaming 24hrs is a lie. Hate to say this, but even a throttled MWEB account is faster during the day. This appears to be an after hours account ONLY. Stone DEAD during the day.

Calling their call center is an exercise in futility. One-one will speak to you. Everyone is always busy. Can't open a ticket because (surprise) their webpage times out before loading in the browser, so I have to use my AFRIHOST account to make this post. Be careful with this account if you need to browse during the day, or you will end up crying - like I am.

I'm on a Gamers King account and http://www.sharenet.co.za/ opened in under 10 seconds. Youtube is also streaming at full line speed. I think you may have other issues at play.
