I can confirm you are experiencing Telkom issues.

I had similar issues with Telkom last night in Durbs. Router refused to authenticate so I just went to bed and the next morning things were back to normal.

Someone posted in another thread that Telkom has already started preps for line upgrades so expect ADSL to be flaky until December. It took me 11 months to get them to admit that my exchange is congested and then to do something about it.

Hey guys. I'm experiencing slow download speeds on my 10 meg line. Any known problems. I'm in durbanville area. Downloads jumping from 90kb/s to 700 odd kb/s then down again.

Downloading torrents? That happens sometimes. Not ISP related.

0,521 Mbps on a 4 M line - was perfect 30 hours ago. Durban KZN.

Thought it was shaping .... but at 03h30 in the morning??

Scary thought, have to ask for assistance - not OWs strongest asset......

There has been no shaping active since 19:30 last night.

Shaping will only be re-applied on Monday at 8am

This is the perfect time to resolve Telkom and router errors as pretty much anything that goes wrong is more than likely not the account.

Been experiencing the same slow browsing speeds during the week, particularly on Gmail, Google and mostly international sites.
Didn't even bother writing to support as I know i will get the same answers as above. What i did instead was test with the following two websites:

http://www.numion.com/Stopwatch/index.html

Using the above website to test how long a website takes to open. Gmail and Google sometimes took up to 3 minutes to open or just timed out.
Local sites where a bit better but still took between 10 to 20 seconds to open. Individual images download on the pages while you wait.

No downloads where in progress.

http://testmy.net/download

Did some simple download tests with small files from 258kB up to 8MB. Downloading is horrible, transfer speeds ranged from between 8kB/s to 27kB/s.

Same thing applies to downloading email attachments, they took forever to download during this week.

So please add me to the growing list of people with the exact same problem during peak times.

Downloads is not worth investigating, as these are shaped during peak.

You say you did not download, but then right underneath that line you say you did some download tests.

If you download, your browsing will instantly be shaped for a period of time. It does not unshape you instantly.

How is your speed today? I do hope you are enjoying the completely unshaped weekend?

We''l if you see a 2MB pdf manual as downloading then there is no point in posting anything further. I download a lot of manuals for work purposes ranging from 2MB to 12MB and it is almost impossible to do during work hours. But let's leave it at that.

When will you be addressing the slow Google, Gmail problem seeing as there are quite a few people with the same problem during peak times?

I can't connect at all today. Tried with the telkom guest account and it authenticates without a hitch. Can this possibly be a telkom downtime issue? Can't see how it could be...

Thanks for the advice

Browsing will be shaped and slow if you download during peak. This affects Gmail etc.

Unfortunately, some folks have found a loophole by downloading via the browsing protocol. In order to protect the network, browsing is shaped when you download. This only applies to peak times.

I have asked the engineers to perform some testing on Monday in relation to Gmail and Google specifically.
