A contention ratio is the amount of people that share capacity.

The rule of thumb is, the more you pay, the lower your contention ratio and higher your priority on the network.

I get that.... but...

Mr Beep, can you confirm contention ratios for your various uncapped products? Are they consistent, or do they change, and most importantly, what are they?

Thank you!

I mean... what are the contention ratios on your uncapped products? I want to make an informed decision when I move to a service provider. So far only Cybersmart have been open about their contention ratios:

15:1 on home uncapped
5:1 on business uncapped.

Please let us know what the contention ratios are on your uncapped products?

There is no point in revealing a number, as Telkoms contention ratios fluctuate rapidly depending on demand at a certain exchange.

Ours work on averages.

The rule of thumb is, the less you pay, the higher your contention and the lower your priority on the network.

Remember, our cost is around R6 per GB in real terms.

Just want to report back.

After MrBeep recreated my profile or something, now I have my normal browsing speeds again in office hours.
Here's a full report of the speeds as they are now since the profile change.

Thanks MrBeep.

I also did a test at a different site now, that isn't a speedtest. It's a test to see if your ISP is limiting/shaping you.

Have a look here for a more detailed report.

Yet Youtube test while checking the Stats for Nerds if you right click on the video, never drops below 3Mbps.

Test done on that same site, but with Video protocol.
In our tests, downloads using control flows achieved up to 202 Kbps while downloads using FlashVideo achieved up to 3342 Kbps.

Thanks, but R6 per gig means little to people who need more speed over volume. I guess I was trying to figure out if there's a way to know how many you're contending with at any point in time, particularly if you're experiencing speed issues. So from your comment, can I assume that you guys can't actually tell what the contention ratio is at any given point for your products? Is the contention ratio up to Telkom then? Lastly, how does my spend affect the contention ratio if it can't be measured in the first place? Apologies for my ignorance, I'm trying to figure it all out.

We can only control the contention ratio on our network, not the Telkom contention.

Understood, thanks... I guess then, my questions relate to your contention ratios - it would be good to be able to know that you guys are not oversubscribed for example. I'm quite sure there are ISP's out there... or rather... that ISP's go through periods where they have to buy more bandwidth to remain competitive. Personally I think that some sort of average figure over the past say 3 months would be a good place to start...

Mrbeep why is the Freedom Capped Unshaped cheaper and by so much VS the other capped accounts you have?

just wondering,if i get the 50gb freedom uncap and hit my cap can i "topup" with the 20gb one also for the R90more"?
or cant u topup

Freedom has a higher contention ratio compared to other Capped products.

It is also a promotional account, thus it might not be available forever.

BUT, if you signup now, you will have the price locked in for life!

You may topup with any of the Freedom Capped denominations, at the Freedom Capped price.

Eg 10GB, 20GB etc

But is that 'higher contention ratio' guaranteed and how? :p

My personal opinion over the whole November Telkom upgrade shebam: Dont change anything. OW network is fine as it is. Im happy with the general speed things are at right now and will happily subscribe to a higher speed account at it's current price. Doubling accounts all across the spectrum with Telkom's upgrades will just make things crap. Things are fine the way it is. My two cents.

I will only upgrade my 2mb Gold Uncapped to 4mb if telscum have a 4mb port for me at my exchange.

My line has gone from yesterday where it is slow and laggy to absolutely terrible today. I am struggling to browse this site :<

Hi Mr Beep. How do I go about getting cancellation forms? I would like to submit my cancellation tomorrow. Cheers.

I have just unshaped the entire network for all folks until 8am tomorrow morning.

Happy downloading!

Don't you feel sorry for the folks on other ISP's who will go to bed shaped tonight?

Hi Fafa,

At 18:32 in the evening? There is definitely something externally at play here, as the network was mostly unshaped when you posted this message.

Kindly PM me with your ADSL username?

In the meantime, please post a tracert to www.openweb.co.za on here for us.
