Remember that Telkom are still performing upgrades so it might also be related to them, but at least the info is being shared here so if it is an OW issue, they're made aware of it and can investigate...

Trying from yesterday to download VS2013 from msdn and it went about 90% then got network error. Trying again today, getting max about 80kbs, but speed up and down, best time 5 hours, worst 19 hours :(

This is the response i got to my slow internet browsing speed complaints , sure this explains the slow internet for other users to :)

"All are working fine.

Let me also take this opportunity to explain how peak time shaping works. Browsing and similar is completely unshaped during peak periods. However, if you download during peak, browsing becomes shaped alongside the download protocol.

The reason for this is that some folks bypass the shaping and download over the browsing (unshaped) protocols, leaving a completely drained network behind, which causes an incredible amount of pain for most people.

Don't despair. An hour or so after you have closed your peak time download, your browsing protocol becomes unshaped again.

Please note, the above rule ONLY applies during peak and when the network is busy. Off peak is mostly unshaped anyways.

May we suggest you schedule your downloads for after 19:00 and ALL weekend.

Kind regards

The last time I got that response from Leon, there was something major up and OpenWeb. I haven't downloaded anything the whole morning and the internet is borked on my side. Afrihost capped is working fine so not a Telkom issue. We had the same problem last month.

2mb uncapped gold and Telkom 4mb line. Was perfect until the line was upgraded.

Is it worth getting a 4mb uncapped everyday or should I just pay for the 4mb Gold uncapped? Use it primarily for streaming.

I am more interested to know what will happen with accounts that were obtained on special - I can fully understand not upgrading client's for free, that just leads to a bad service level. I don't mind slapping an extra R50 Openweb's way (as per the current 2MB Gamer's King Special). I haven't checked the website too heavily but it doesn't look like Gamer's King is normally available. I would only like to get the upgraded account once Telkom bestows a free line speed upgrade on me which may be in a week or 3 months. Knowing my luck, 3 months, so obviously wouldn't want to pay for something I can only half use.

Yeah I'm on the OpenWeb Gold special for R299.

Last time around they had the special for the 2Mb account just as Telkom upgraded all 1mb to 2mb and since I was already on the special for the 1Mb account I thought they won't move me over but they did... so maybe we just wait till the next special comes around?

This has been discussed quite extensively on this thread. Please page back for this discussion.

This does not sound like an account problem. Our speed does not fluctuate. Shaping is pretty solid based on the hour.

Kindly email [email protected] so that we can test the account and advise further

If you want an uncapped unshaped product, I suggest you open up your wallet and dig deep :)

Openweb has been fairly transparent about their shaping and they at least have a very small "rolling window" in which your account returns to normal. Unlike others that dump you in to the cesspit of dial up speeds and condemn you to stay there for the rest of the week / month.

On the days when I am at home during the day, my gaming performs pretty well and so does my browsing. A hiccup here or there that a router reset normally fixes. Full speed downloads after hours. Pretty much what it says on the box :)

Your latency is shocking.

Telkom has probably upgraded the folks on your exchange without upgrading the exchange itself, leaving you with a congested exchange.

May I suggest you log a fault with them by calling 10210

I have made the following call on this topic:

Until end January 2014, any client using a promotional account will be able to upgrade their account to a higher speed at the higher speeds promotional price, even if the promotion is not currently running.

Eg, if you are on a 2Mbps Gold Uncapped (Leon) for R299 and would like to upgrade to 4Mbps Gold Uncapped (Leon), you will pay the promotional price of R589.

Upgrade requests may be emailed to [email protected]

This is why I am loving Openweb right now!

Expect my upgrade soon :)
