Twitch.tv's horribly slow during daytime.

I am CONVINCED that the guy next door is phoning his mother in England, and the guy three houses down ... no all the guys in my street are surfing the net, and the old duck in the house round the corner is using her telkom line as a washing line ...

This would account for the slow line speed tonight which is problem exchange congestion. :(

Cant wait for the lines in my area to suffer from line diarrhea. :D:D

Hi Subversion,

I'm afraid we cannot speak on behalf of the ISP you mentioned, however, OpenWeb does not throttle, it shapes based on how busy the network is, not based on your usage.

We have a large variety of different package choices. If you would like, you can PM me with your contact number and I can have one of our lovely sales ladies, or handsome sales guys give you a ring.

What are Afrihost's throttling polices like compared to other ISPs? How's the performance for stuff like Twitch.tv, Youtube and gaming? Any feedback I'd appreciate, looking to switch ISPs ;)

Hi MrBeep, how much shaping is currently taking place on the network? Speedtest brings back this:

Download Speed: 5925 kbps (740.6 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 543 kbps (67.9 KB/sec transfer rate)
Latency: 24 ms

While the IS news server gives me a flat line 147KB/s

Hi dj,

The network is currently completely unshaped as it is not busy.

However, the news server could be busy. Does it give the same results on other downloads?

Same here... 141kb/s .. news server only

Any issues experienced tonight? Ran great earlier on (17h00 ~ 22h00) but now suffering majorly on download speed. Streaming and browsing specifically

Speedtest shows 488kbps on 4Mbps line :/
tracert to mail.openweb.co.za (41.72.150.7) shows 1100ms response, whereas all other responses were below 40ms

No exchange, line or router issues AFAIK.

Edit: Issue experienced between 23h00 - 23h30. As at 23h45, service resumed as per norm. mail.openweb.co.za has 32ms response and speedtest shows +3500kbps download speed.

No issues here. Traceroute looks good too.

shaping != throttling.

Shaping does NOT equal throttling.

If your torrents are limited to say, 100kBps, but YouTube streams at 400kBps and your browsing / email is full speed, then you're being shaped.

If ALL your available bandwidth is limited to 100kBps (torrents, YouTube, browsing, email), you are being throttled.

Thanks for that clear definition.

In that case, ''exchange congestion'' or when the account is so slow during the day ie cant browse or download,or do torrents it is the same as throttling, albeit called shaping,

This can be classed as contention ratio :)

EDIT: Too many people contending for bandwidth.

If it's slow with all ISP's then it's contention (congestion) at the exchange.

If it's slow only with the ISP, then it's contention on the account.

Hi Mr Beep

Do you know what path we follow to Openweb using PPPOE from Cape town? Trying to piece together a troubleshooting guide here as it seems come the end of the month there is an issue. i cannot pinpoint it to openweb but all signs point to anything on the MTN / IS backbones so i am trying to put together a trace of how Openweb expect it to work until i hit your network. ie, backhaul providers you use etc.....

Hi Kryptonite

Kindly post a tracert and I will decipher it for you.

Damn ... Should cook up a story that using the internet is bad for your health ... that will help me out. :D

But seriously, since Telkoms line upgrades, I have DEFINATELY felt the difference, and scanning these forums, it seems to be a common thread across ISPs. AFAIK Telkom deny this, but as a layman - I can understand why the ISPs are all a bit pi$$ed with Telkom - they are getting the brunt of the complaints for something probably out of their control.

The whole debate of shaping and throttling - I suspect - is driven by exactly what you describe above IMHO.

Would you agree?

Hi MrBEEP, I've decided to go with OpenWeb :)

Quick question - what is the difference in shaping policy between GamersKing and the standard uncapped accounts? Was about to sign up for Standard uncapped when I noticed your signature ;)

Does GamersKing have lower priority for anything that Standard doesn't?

Quick edit: Also by signing up for that account will I not have to pay for the month of February? If I'm understanding the promo correctly ;)
