It is such a pity that the client would not like to PM me.

It is also strange that he experienced these 'awful' speeds after hours, as we have very little to no shaping most evenings.

Oh well, you win some you lose some.

LOL - Yeah, theres a fine line between constructive critism and trolling. :D:D

Streaming is finally back to normal. I can now stream 480p again without issues while 360p had to buffer every few seconds last weekend.

Hmmm, tonight (9:30pm) international all over the place again.
Can live with it but I'm streaming and can buffer - not gaming.

That's with a capped account.

[EDIT] no can't watch futubox - changing to spare afihost account.

Noticing the same on my end, I'm guessing the system is under a lot of load atm?

Hmm something definitely slow - downloading TESO beta launcher at 60KB/s on a 2MB line...GG! Hopefully the actual download will be faster, it's a big one and I need it to be done by Friday...

11PM and full speed. I see a trend developing (someone mentioned same time last night).

Any idea where I can find out (besides phoning Hellkom) if they are working on my exchange?

Two nights in a row after about 20:30 my stuff just go wild, I've even had players in public matches telling me i'm lagging?

It's very intermittent, so by the time I get to do a tracert it's either normal or first HOP is about 60

Maybe I've got the answer seeing that it's after 20:00, what are the chances that techies are working?

I'm on a 2MB gamers, and with DGL started lag is a moerse no no.

Alright I know this is about Verizon in the USA but it actually contains a lot of information we need to keep in mind when dealing with slow issues from OW or any other provider:

http://arstechnica.com/information-...d-amazon-but-theres-no-actual-evidence-of-it/

Verizon could be throttling Netflix and Amazon, but there’s no actual evidence of it
The things customer service reps say probably shouldn't be taken as gospel.

...

Raphael's description of the testing he performed (downloading remotely, rather than via VPN) doesn't rule out this much more mundane problem. The last hop, between Verizon's core network and Raphael's home (or office) could well be the source of the slowdown. If at 4pm each afternoon the kids are back from school, watching cartoons on Netflix and YouTube, watching streaming games on Twitch, and all the other bandwidth intensive things that we know home users tend to do in the afternoons and evenings, we'd expect to see poor performance on residential connections.

Business services, which tend to have lower contention, and don't tend to have the same afternoon/evening surge, will be fine, even after 4 pm.

To be able to authoritatively pinpoint the sources of slowness requires a lot more knowledge of ISP networks than ISPs are willing to disclose. As end-users, we simply can't see which network ports on which switches and routers are running close to capacity. We don't know which links are massively oversubscribed. We also have no insight into who is buying bandwidth from who.

...

Quoted the part that I feel applies to ISP's in general. In our case though we do know who OW is buying their bandwidth from depending on our login names :P.

MrBEEP can you comment about this part of the article:

Verizon could, if it wanted to, figure out where the slowdown was coming from. Its network equipment will expose the information the company needs to determine which links are congested and which are not.

Can your equipment tell where congestion is with regards to our login credentials? What I am trying to say is if we email support saying the line is slow and give our username can your equipment trace our data feed from your core to our router and see where the congestion is happening? Does Telkom provide you with the access to see that?

I am just curious about these sort of things so I hope you don't mind my asking :).

What account you running on? I've been hitting full speed since 18h00.

4MB Silver Uncapped. Some evening speeds are better, but I can definitely say that speeds have gone south since joining OW. It's not THAT bad for me to look elsewhere though, just frustrating sometimes.

To be fair - I also think the Telkom upgrades has a definite impact on speed, although my area haven't been done yet AFAIK.

The use of Netflix is illegal in South Africa. Therefore we load it onto the normal Streaming category and not the Priority streaming category.

We do not have the time to individually shape streaming sites. We categorize them accordingly.

Latency jumps are almost always caused by Telkom or hardware on the client side.

The network has not seen increased latency in quite some time.

The next time this happens, please post a tracert to www.google.com

Router pretty newish, a netgear something or other, how can I check if it's my side or telkom?

Will try a spare router tonight, and try and get a tracert, if it happens again.

I wasn't saying it was OW, as Im very happy with what I'm getting, was just trying to figure out if I can find out if my exchange has pooped.

Thanks MrBeep

Thanks for the reply MrBEEP but I was more asking if you guys can see congestion from your core to say my router? Or does Telkom not provide your with that level of access? I realize this may not get a answer but I can't help but ask :).

Unfortunately they do not allow us access to this information.

:(

I did not even say Good morning yet!

A very good morning to you friends!

Good morning MrBEEP :)

Just a quick question with regards to streaming priority. Is Twitch.tv part of priority streaming or is it also classified as part of the normal streaming category? I don't have any major issues with twitch, just asking out of interest.

Thanks
