OpenWeb ADSL Feedback Thread

Hello

This could be. It all depends which promotion you took, when you took it, and how long you have been a client.

At OpenWeb, we also decrease contention ratios based on loyalty. If a client has been with us for a while, they will more than like have a lower contention ratio than a client who stays with us for a month or two and then moves on.

The ultimate aim is to offer the best value, with the best contention for the best price. Loyalty definitely helps!

I'm also having poor NNTP speeds at the moment (I'm on a 1mbps Gold a/c on IS backbone), I've been speaking to OW about it when I have seen it, just dropped MrBeep an email now as part of some troubleshooting he has been helping with.
Not getting anything better than 15kbps at the moment.
Speeds were maxing my line until about 10 days ago when this started. Speeds up now and then and a/h but has been fine o/h before then.
Does seem like it is NNTP being shaped as I can pull a file over FTP & HTTP from IS at full speeds (I'm using IS News server)
I would have thought (maybe wrongly) that being local traffic from the IS News server it wouldn't have been shaped.
Also been getting slow speeds on 4mbps gold, but resetting the router gets it back up to full speed, what is weird is that if the queue finishes and something is added later, then it crawls but a router reset sends it back to full speed.

Maybe, but this is not apparent at all. How would anybody know this or even be able to prove it?
Again agreed. I am just waiting to hear from MrBeep about this.

As it stands now, there is no reason whatsoever why I should stay with Openweb and pay R297 for a 2Mbps account, when I can move to WebAfrica (also now on an IS backbone) and pay R239.

OpenWeb does have their bottom rung uncapped Vanilla accounts at R239 for 2Mbps. Question is; are these better or worse than what WebAfrica is offering?

This is EXACTLY what happens to me. Same account type too.

This is just assuming you are using SabNzbd. The newer versions has a feature set as default that checks new files added to see if it will download ok. It wil look like its crawling for a while (1KB) and then start the actual download. depending on file size it can take a while but can save you downloading a huge file just to fail at repair.

You cannot downgrade an existing account to a promotional account.

You are more than likely on a lower contention ratio compared to someone who has been with OpenWeb for 1 or 2 months.

You can however downgrade to a normal (non-promotional) account, for example Vanilla.

Our Vanilla uncapped contention ratios are on par if not superior to similar offerings on the market

Again agreed. I am just waiting to hear from MrBeep about this.

Well I'm just very happy with my account at the moment and while I am also paying more now than the current list price of my account I really don't mind because it just works and have no inclination to move over to another provider. Still wouldn't mind seeing a more transparent approach to the loyalty system.

I have that disabled, the checking took too long and it's not often that a download fails

well im stuck at work so i cant reset the router everytime. it should just work automatic like. it should just like fly always. lol.

Yes, I did read that bit after I tried to buy the special account.

I was not aware of this, though at present the faster line speed will be of much greater benefit to me. Will those earned lower contention ratios spill over into a Vanilla account? I have only been with you guys since the end of November last year though?

Not that the Vanilla accounts will be particularly terrible, but I have gotten used to the prioritisation of gaming and downloading on the current promotion I am on (Gamer's delight, Downloader's right) and am hesitant to move over to your bottom rung offering.

All I am saying is that with this policy in place of new promotions being off limits to existing customers is having the effect of keeping people like me paying you R169 at 1Mbps for instance, instead of R297 for a similar quality of service at 2Mbps for instance.

I think I will give the Vanilla account a go though. I will be using the account for downloading (hoping for 200kBps most of the time), live streaming (uninterrupted at 360p would be fine) and Youtube (360p playing without interruptions would be fine) and then some gaming (hoping for 200ms to international servers at least). I really hope I am not going to be disappointed. Do you think these goals are attainable on a 2mbps Vanilla account?

Hi Kalster,

The rule of thumb with ADSL is you pay for what you get.

Until Telkom drops their IPC rates, this will be the state of ADSL in South Africa.

I've tried the router reset quite a few times, sometimes just dropping the line by unplugging the phone cable and other times rebooting the router itself. Didn't make a difference for me doing either. MrBeep has engineers investigating for me.
Will be interesting to hear what IS has to say, I don't have a backup IS ISP a/c anymore since AH moved to MTN to test with another IS based ISP to the News server.
I'm not too urgent to get things downloaded, but would be good to know the outcome as 5KB/s is not great for NNTP.
Thanks to MrBeep for the assistance in getting to the bottom of this; appreciated.

I understand. What do you think of my expectations for a 2mbps Vanilla account? Are they realistic?

Hi Kalster

200KB/s torrent download speeds during the day will not be possible on a Vanilla uncapped.

Your expectations might be too high for the contention ratio on Vanilla.

Generally, during off peak periods, you should do pretty well.

At 5pm almost on the dot, my NNTP speeds to the IS News server jumped to 105kbps (maxing my line), be interested to hear if the same happened to other people. I am guessing it was time based, but just guessing.

funnily enough that behaviour was prevelant on a telkom line. would die at 8am and resurrect at 6pm. i moved here to avoid that. seems it has followed me here..

same here at 5. two minutes past 5 to be precise.

I have been logging my traffic for the past couple of days so I know that it started this morning at 6:55. The speed just dropped. At 07:05 it reach a constant and it stayed there the whole day till 5. Time Based.. Me think so. If I was on an unshaped package that would be fine. But I pay extra for an unshaped experience. Whether it was IS or Openweb is another story. If all of us that had problems with NNTP today live in Cape Town. Then it might even be telkom.
