Hi Mike

I have alerted them regarding this.

Well that weekend speed was nice while it lasted .... speeds are back down to 30kbps to the IS News Server for me and dropping (can't say when that dropped to that speed, sometime between 7am and now - maybe @gjfourie has a record - pity my router can't show the throughput via SNMP).
I am guessing in the past 2 weeks there is a lot more aggressive shaping or more customers on the network (when did WA swop back to IS now, no let me not speculate) doing different things.

Question for MrBeep/anyone - is shaping done on customers connections as a whole or to international sites? ie is the shaping trying to prevent the IPC from getting maxed out or the international bandwidth from getting used up. If the former I can see why they do this to local servers, if the latter then speeds should be max to the local servers.
Did IS engineers respond with anything? I'm guessing they don't need to as it was clearly shaping causing the speeds not the IS News server itself.

besides facebook sort of getting on with it, and my broadband, can't log onto overseas websites... been refreshing for the past 20 minutes... i'm usually never home during the day, and in general don't care about daytime speeds, but hell, this is pathetic even just for browsing! - torrents.... 2kbs on the 4meg gold account....

Hi LabAnimal

Your account will never be shaped to a level where it is unusable. There is something else wrong.

Kindly email [email protected] so that we can investigate

Sorry. Dont have log for today, but mine is also back to +- 200KB/s. 4meg gold unshaped and +- 25KB/s on 1meg silver from another line and location.

Correction. Dropped again 18 minutes past 9 by 50%. Now at +- 100KB/s NNTP on 4m unshaped.

I'll wait a while, heading out, if its still not behaving correctly when I return then we'll look into it. - thanks for the quick reply.

Kindly PM me.

I have had a look on your ADSL account and you are not connected to it

I am using a trial account (4meg gold unshaped). supposed to have it made permanent today. Wanted to do it on friday but was told by support I have to wait till today. Thanx for the offer to help again but the problem is not on my side. The trial account is perfomring very well. Just last week friday during bussiness hours and it looks like today the same thing as well on my silver account. same time same "shaping". Please let us know if you hear anything from the IS news guys or from your guys.

You must please move back to your original account.

You cannot comment on shaping based on a trial account.

I am connected to your original unshaped service and it is running at full speed, as it should

Silver uncapped is a shaped service, thus it will be shaped.

You indicated that your unshaped account is running slow, when you are not connected to your unshaped account.

I give up.

1. tested friday. 2 lines. 3 different accounts. Same result during friday the whole day till 5. Same as reported by other users EXACT TIMES, and I am sure they do not live close to me.
2. Mike reported same today. Did not have nntp running. started NNTP download, same result on trial account. Same result on silver account from another location. Not here.

If I can't comment on "shaping" on trial account, then trial accounts are not a true reflection of the actual accounts offered. Thus not a trial account.

As I said, I give up. The other users who are experiencing the same thing can take it from here.

My torrents are also back down to <10kbps. Still no idea if this is due to an issue or if acceptable shaping now means 10% line speed on certain protocols during the day, because every time it comes up the question doesn't get answered. :(

The rest of the weekend was bliss, but now it's back to waiting until after 5 to use certain protocols.

I finally got my 4Mbps Gold Uncapped trial working. I'm very disappointed with it. It's basically identical to my existing Mweb account. Fairly rubbish speed test results during working hours (around 2.7Mbps), torrents don't work and Youtube load times seem worse than before. I can only imagine what vanilla, standard and silver must be like...

I've just made the move to open web on Sunday. Torrents have been flying. Maxing my line no issues. With mweb torrents are dead 24/7. they were also shaped to death during the day before they died to like < 50Kb/s.

Either way I'm happy :)

I do have one question regarding the 2 for 1 special on the silver account. I've only received one account login. I was under the impression you'd receive two? Or do you allow two concurrent connection on the same account?
Even a link to the answer would suffice.

But thank you!

My Standard Uncapped account is flying. 2Mb line tested at 1.7Mbps, torrents flow, YouTube is great (480p no lag, 720p slight buffer) and the entire experience has been great!

Torrents appear to be shaped to around 75% during the day on the 2mbps Vanilla account, which isn't bad. Was getting full speed over the weekend. What are peek times on the OpenWeb network again? 07h00 - 19h00?

Edit: scratch that. Going full speed about. :)

I'm encouraged that you guys are experiencing good performance. Not sure why my account is so slow - it's definitely not my line as my Mweb account performs better and Telkom recently came over and got it flying up to 6Mbps.

Agreed. I have an average daily use of +-5500MB and 99% of that is torrents. Managed to use +-140000MB since the 7th of feb. No complaints.

I however found some issues at one stage but I set my dns to 192.210.2.2 (IIRC) and bounced my router and bam it ran smooth!

You are more than likely using MWEB DNS settings or similar.

Please change the DNS in your router to:

Primary DNS: 8.8.8.8
Secondary DNS: 8.8.4.4

@MrBeep - I take it using OpenDNS settings will not interfere? I use the OpenDNS network to filter pages, etc. on my home network.

That question asked, so far so good. :)
