Gamco express terms said:
GamCo ADSL Uncapped Express
This Business ADSL service has been developed mainly for the conservative business user who requires the assurance of an uninterrupted and fixed cost ADSL service. The Business ADSL Express service is a managed service, whereby the customers usage is monitored and recorded. The service is allocated a certain threshold for the month which is divided into a 10 day rolling window. If a customer reaches his 10 day threshold before the 10th day, his bandwidth will be halved (e.g. 512Kbps to 256Kbps 1MB to 512K). However, if his consumption is reduced, his bandwidth will be restored to the purchased level. This mechanism has been put in place in order to discourage abuse of the service and thereby giving the conservative business user a more superior service.

The thresholds are as follows:
512 = 30 Gig for 30 days which is divided in 3 segments of 10 Gig each. The usage is monitored over a 10 day rolling window period
1024 = 60 Gig for 30 days which is divided in 3 segments of 20 Gig each. The usage is monitored over a 10 day rolling window period.

Interesting thread.

Well, I've also noticed another session on my uncapped OpenWeb account.

If this is what it takes to make these accounts affordable, I don't see a problem. Provided:

1) It does not hamper speeds.
2) It does not cause disconnects.
3) It does not cause authentication problems.
4) Both parties are informed that they are sharing a username and log-in.

However, I don't believe any of these are true.

I did have an authentication problem last month to the extent that I had to use a different account until the problem was resolved. Did a "co-user" give the account details to someone else, thus preventing me from logging in?

I have noticed reduced performance (on multi-threaded downloads) from time-to-time. Whereas these would normally be at 400KB/s they would drop to say 250KB/s for some time before reverting back. Not that I'm complaining. Since I ordered 1024k uncapped, any speed above this is a bonus. But again, it is indicative of a shared account.

When my line disconnects (which is quite frequently) it often takes a minute or two of authentication failures before it reconnects.

And, of course, I thought only one connection was possible on the account. But today the password was changed along with a warning message that multiple connections would result in the account being suspended. So clearly there can be more than one physical connection.

I don't like the idea that misuse of the account by a third party (or my co-user) could impair or cause the service I've paid for to be disconnected. If an illegal login occurs, can Openweb determine which of the two co-users are at fault, if either? I don't see how that is possible.

On the one hand I love the account, on the other hand I want the assurance that I will continue to get what I paid for, and that the quality of the service will not be overly compromised.

Wow! This has certainly turned into a heated debate, and I believe I should make a few official statements from OpenWeb:

1. We do not sell 1 account to multiple folks. That would be against our contract with our upstream provider.

2. We DO recycle accounts, which is what went wrong with savage's account in the first place. (And of course, bit of a MrBEEP boo boo, which I believe I have now apologised for extensively)

Defenition of recycle: Bobby has a 512k Uncapped in January. Bobby cancells / doesn't pay for his account for February. Instead of deleting the account, and recreating it, we change the password, and assign it to the next user.

This is absolutely legal, and our upstream providers are aware / have no problem with this practise.

3. Multiple sessions on an Uncapped account. Sometimes Telkom does not properly disconnect your session even after your router has terminated the session. This then causes multiple sessions when you next try and login. After the third day of this happening, you cant login because your grace concurrent sessions are all taken.

4. Some clients have been suspended for allowing multiple sessions on their accounts, and our upstream provider takes this very seriously, as it costs them double the money. Thus, we do not support multiple sessions on one account.

I hope this helps with the debate.

ty MrBeep...

And I do hope no one sees this as a attack on OpenWeb. They did screw up in my case, they did appologise, I'm happy using my account at home as I type this...

I just hope the 'leaches' using other peoples uncapped accounts realise now, 1) You are not allowed to, 2) Even though it is a unlimited account, is still is theft / fraud, and 3) *phew* no accounts are double booked...

It did make for a very interesting conversation for yesterday and most of what is left for today though :)

Since I wrote my previous post, I have not been able to access my Uncapped Openweb account. I repeatedly get an authentication failure.

This is the same account I used last month. Yesterday morning I received an email informing me that my password has been changed. I managed to connect once or twice yesterday, but since about 5pm I haven't been able to login.

I notified Mr Beep via PM at 17.40 yesterday evening. I also sent emails to Mr Beep and Openweb Support highlighting the fact that I could see another, albeit inactive, session on my account; this being the obvious reason why I cannot connect. They have neither responded to, nor resolved this.

The explanation that Telkom is to blame for not properly disconnecting my sessions does not hold water. Not being able to access this account I have used my WebAfrica prepaid account since then. However, checking my ISDSL usage stats on the Openweb account just now I find yet another session on this account that was begun at 23.02 on 2 February. Duration 4.42.29. 31.8615 MB sent. 1627.2077 MB received. 1659.07 MB Total.

This cannot be explained other than by the obvious fact that someone else is using my login.

Meanwhile I am paying for a service that I am not receiving.

So what is this? Another screw up?

Hi Gatecrasher

I have logged a fault with IS, and have given you a temp account to use.

I apologise for any inconvenience, but this one truly is not a MrBEEP boo boo.

GateCrasher, are you on the 1024 MyADSL special accounts?

And when you log into the ISDSL site? How many sessions do you see? (I know we arent suppose to use that site, but still)

It looks like there's another session connecting from Rosebank but it could be anything I guess. My account's still working fine anyway.

I am also unable to log in using my account details which was supposed to be activated on the 1st of February. I can however log into the Internet Solutions usage page.

I sent e-mail to Openweb support, but two hours later I have yet to receive a response.

On the usage page does it show an active session? Is it an uncapped account?

No, no active session.

It is a 1GB prepaid account that I bought with the intention of bridging the gap to the end of last month. Due to Openweb's billing cycle I had to wait until the 1st of February, or pay again on the 27th of last month. I opted for the former.
