Added another iso to test. This line will not see more than 200KB/s of http downloads. Full speed on local but 2x downloads max out at 200KB/s combined.

Ah, 180KB/s only during office hours on an http download. Getting the latest ClearOS iso. I hope this is not a reflection of IS daytime speeds.

Consider yourself lucky you're on a 4meg. It seems the IS shaping on faster lines is a lot more lenient than that on slower lines. On my 384 you pretty much couldn't download anything.

Sorry to hear dude :( Friend of mine on 1Meg OW IS is also unhappy with the daytime shaping.

Well if it keeps like this I will move to another provider. Have already been given the go-ahead by the powers that be. Giving it a few days. I've never liked IS.

Hey, MrBeep.

Any news on accounts slower than 10Meg and faster than 4Meg?

I'd love to put a 6meg account on my 8meg line.

Without paying too much more either if possible. :D

That afrihost 10meg bundle looks awesome, but I don't wanna move my line.

Yeah, they moved me to a BCS account, and while it's better than the IS account, P2P is dead during the week.

I'm strongly considering dropping my account and moving to Mweb as well. Ever since losing the VB account, I haven't been quite satisfied with my internet, because the performance is never quite good enough. I don't mind shaping, but if you have to make compromises like losing the ability to torrent during the week, then I'm not very happy. Everyone on Mweb keeps telling me that their experience is amazing and they don't have to make any compromises at all, so I don't quite see the point in paying a premium for a product which has lower contention ratios, but has some of its protocols shaped to the point where they become unusable. Not when Mweb's account is only R200 a month.

If I need to download a file that is only available as a torrent, I want to be able to do so, not wait until the weekend. I'm giving myself until the 25th to make a decision, seeing as I'll be paying for the account until the end of September regardless.

Gold Uncapped 4MB on IS and still running like a dream even after punishing it a little over the weekend. AWESOME.

Not exceeding 150KB/s now.

This is utterly pathetic now. I've been with MWEB at home for about 4 months now and I never have this kind of crap during the day, sure it's not unshaped but it's not anywhere near this level, and it's R200pm less.

I'd like to get this download to finish my work SOME DAY TODAY.

Are you downloading via torrent or usenet that you are getting that speed? Just bare in mind, downloading protcols are shaped during the day.

No, Bitorrent, Usenet and other p2p protocols are not used here, at all. These are standard downloads via http on port 80.

Alright. I must admit that not every download I do (standard http on Port 80) is at full speed. For example, this morning I downloaded yet another update for my Kindle Library Manager and that was at full speed, 410Kbps plus. Shortly after that I had to download a sound card driver, pulled that at about 40-50kbps.

I also suspect that your download speed is only as fast as the weakest link. So if the site you are downloading from is only allowing downloads at max 50kbps and you have a 10MB line, 50kbps is the speed you will be getting regardless.

Or if the place you're downloading from allows multi-threaded downloads.

Well it wouldn't surprise me if your Kindle update was locally cached on the Akamai servers, ie: Windows Update, Lenovo drivers, lots of things are cached locally in SA transparently. I checked by logging into my machine at home and downloading the same file there, pretty much full speed on my MWEB account.

Local downloads and surfing is generally fine but international is still very poor.

Or if the place you're downloading from allows multi-threaded downloads.

It's not usually a problem with a large company site or a file hosting site like Filehoppo for example. On my old OW VB / DSL Heaven account I regularly had problems where single 'thread' connection downloads would max out at about 60KB/s but 8 connections using DTA would max out my line. That's all fine and well when you have a good download manager but some programs and apps that just spawn single connection downloads for updates, would take hours to update.

Anyone else finding access to Gmail painfully slow on IS?

Can't even load the Gmail page now ffs.

You guys all seem to be having the same problems we are having on our Afrihost uncapped accounts - NOTE this will only be the Cape Town people and those who route through Cape Town - like PE etc. Our downloads during the day are pathetic all because of IS and their IPC issues in Cape Town. We have been experiencing issues for the last week but it has been assured that they are working on the issues - Telkom currently the hold-up - apparently

Typical SA quality of service.

One can imagine our frustration when some of us were shunted onto the IS network without warning. I feel like an unwilling beta tester.

Hello

There are no general Gmail issues today. We use Gmail extensively in the company and we are based in Durban and JHB, and both locations are running perfectly.

If you experience a problem, please set your DNS to:

Primary DNS: 8.8.8.8
Secondary DNS: 8.8.4.4 and try again
