Openweb uncapped ADSL feedback

My silver uncapped connection was sucking last night, 0.5MB on speedtest. Though Keoma responded to a previous email of mine about speeds saying that speedtest.net is not a reliable source of speed measurement and my connection was fine, even though i tested 2 different points with the same slow result (US + UK) - not sure what to think about that response of his.

Never the less.. today my connection is all good :-)

:)

Well speedtest.net isn't always a "truthful representation" of the situation.
Speedtest.net does at least 2 connections to the server. Sometimes single-threaded connections fail miserably, but speedtests prove the line to be "fine".

People are quiet instead of compliment went things go well, so I though I would break the silence and congratulate Openweb on a sterling month of Gold uncapped!

My account is the best it has ever been before! Well done guys!

^5.

Only issues I've had were as a result of issues with a) other networks and b) Seacom outage :p

^5 to MrBeep.

Oh well, International is now completely down on my Gold IS account.

Woke up today to find my OpenWeb Gold Uncapped international totally dead (IS backbone), I've emailed support. Glad I have another ISP a/c as a backup in the interim.

MrBeep - could this posting (from another local forum) be what I am feeling, maybe the work overran or is still affecting some IS a/c? (and BTW I have reset my router etc)

Dear IS Client

RESCHEDULED (previously scheduled for 9/2/12)

Planned IS Change Notification.

AFFECTED SERVICE: International Access & ADSL
LOCATION: between South Africa and international sites START DATE: Fri 10 Feb 12 00h01 (SAST) END DATE: Fri 10 Feb 12 05h00 (SAST) EXPECTED DURATION: 10 min
IMPACT: Increased latency
REASON FOR CHANGE: IS engineer to optimise international routing IS REFERENCE: CRQ9140

ADDITIONAL INFO:
Due to miscommunication, our international upstream service providers scheduled technical resources for Friday 10th (and not Thurs 9/02/12 as previously planned). We do apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.

The scheduled change (INTL Access services between SA and London affected. Optimise backbone infrastructure. Service interruption < 4hrs) did not take place this morning.

Regards

The IS GSC

Hey Friends,

We do apologize for that! Seacom at their best!

The problem has now been resolved, thus all services have returned to normal

Signed up last night for the 30GB Local Plus offering from OpenWeb, did the eft, sent the proof of payment, got the adsl details this morning. But why can I access international sites ?

It comes with a little bit of international :)

Anyone experiencing int latency problems on VB? Pingtest a Dallas server and got 280ms, did the same to a Washington dc server got 770ms. Checked my backup account and I have no issues.

VB is very unreliable for me, downloads are OK but Youtube, Google, lots of other international sites are wonky.

Local is flawless.

btw, what's your Youtube experience like on VB as a whole, in general?

Youtube: 360p streams fine, 480p sometimes, 720p if I'm lucky. Overall VB has been great for me, it's just the past few days where I have constant high pings to certain servers. And keep losing connection on team speak.

Any DSL heaven users having issues with that backbone?

I don't really take speedtest as gospel but so here are a few I did on VB from some Linux distro mirrors.

9-15KB/s from ftp.debian.org
9-12KB/s from bandshed.net
1-2KB/s from ubuntu.saix.net (local mirror should be fast, surely)

This is typical of VB lately.

Ah, so I'm not the only one then. A 4meg line should not have trouble with a 720p stream.

I've got access to a server on DSL Heaven, what servers do you want me to ping/download from? I only have ssh on the server (no GUI so I can't run speedtest from it)
