operation RROD

How many times I am I going to hear that you misplaced your proof of purchase and then get your knickers in a knot when you have issues proving when you bought the console?

Its an electronic piece of equipment under warranty. KEEP YOU PROOF OF PURCHASE!

Pretty sure I heard a year - and you won't get a new super duper one either ... so it'll break withn 6-18 months

actually you do get a new super duper one, and you only get a 3 month warranty if you did not have PoP. if you did have PoP, then the warranty on the replaced unit is the greater of 12 months or the remainder of your original warranty IIRC

that may be how it's always been, but it don't make it right. how come you don't need a PoP for the PS3? if it breaks all you do is call partserve and they can check your serial number on their systems and can tell whether or not you're in warranty.

microsoft also don't know about this whole "keep receipt for warranty" nonsense when you call to ask them.

i'm pretty sure its unlawful, all that needs to be done is for someone to take mi digital to court when they refuse to honour a warranty for lack of a PoP.

but alas, courts cost money and we'd rather just pay the R700 bullcrap fee and get on with what we all love: gaming. please pass the vaseline :(

The PS3 serial is kept on a database for 13 months. I don't think they have such a system for the Xbox 360 (MiDs fault not Microsoft).

Proof of purchase is not necessary overseas, just the warranty seal is checked when it goes to Microsoft. Some territories (US) they do repairs, and others get a swap out.

Shafting the consumer is a SA sport :D

Surely using the serial number only works if the turnover is fast enough? How long does a unit typically sit in the shop?

I'm having all the same problems right now. My console bricked last Friday. I faxed all the necessary paperwork through to Mi Digital on Sunday, and ... nothing. Their phone numbers are disconnected, and their email address bounces messages.

I've left two complaints on hellopeter, but Microsoft hasn't responded either.

I've just faxed all my stuff through again. I'm not holding my breath or anything.

aarrgghh!! I got a darn RROD on my baby, and my PoP is faded, damn the Incredible Connection for using cheap thermal paper, the incredible logo is still on it with the security stamp can't see the xbox stuff clearly, will it be ok, do they swap out or repair also what is the time frame for Incredible since I bought it there, does microsoft send the swap unit there or what? thanks for the reply cheers

well if my console has a manufacture date of late 2007 and early 2008 like my consoles, and i lost the slip, and the xbox has a three year RROD warranty, then surely the turnover time is irrelevant? because that means my consoles are covered until late 2010 and early 2011 at the earliest respectively, regardless of when they were sold. if they were sold later and you have PoP then obviously they're covered for longer. well i had to pay the handling fee twice for the above consoles last year.

mi digital are just creating new revenue streams. i heard that they recently moved to a new building. must have bought the new place cash with all the "handling fees" they keep charging us.

lets see, if 500k xbox's where sold in sa, and xbox has a 33% failure rate (yeah right, more like 50%), that means 165k consoles broke. lets guestimate that 30% of those lost their slips or bought their units from abroad, so that makes 49.5k units, multiply by R680 handling fee, gives us R33.66 million. or roughly translated, the cost of a new building and new cars for all employees.

What do they do with the RROD consoles anyway?

Change the motherboard and resell?

im sure it all gets shipped off back to europe and new boards and a new drive is put it. Check the serial number and manufacturing date on your replacement its like white like something has been blocked out

Please check your PM's.

You can register your console against your MSN profile on the XBOX web-site. When you put the serial number in there to register it, you will see your date of manufacture as well as the expiry date of your warranty. As far as I'm concerned, the whole PoP issue is just some more bureaucratic BS.
