In the last 48 hours before the general elections, other opposition parties are turning on the Democratic Alliance to accuse its officials of bribery and corruption.

The Congress of the People on Monday accused an official with an office close to that of Cape Town Mayor Helen Zille, the DA leader, of taking money from a family "in despair" and in return promising to secure them housing.

The official, whom Cope named as Ismail Petersen, is said to work for DA councillor Frank Martin although he told the complainants that he worked in the mayor's office.

Meanwhile up in Gauteng, the Freedom Front Plus promises to present later on Monday "particulars of systemic corruption, non-transparency, and intimidation of whistleblowers" in the DA-controlled city council of Midvaal.

Yep, and when the DA gets cr4p loads of votes etc who are going to be the first people asking to be a coalition???

And ffs COPE moaning about corruption, a bit rich actually, maybe they're just jealous because of their financial problems....

And they've never been involved in corruption...

I see this big tolerance towards the DA.Everytime they fck up,you just go and look for something on the other side to justified it.And all those virtual concern taxpayers will just be quite, because the other side is worse.

Am i right to say that the da supporters actually need the Anc to fck up in order to make them look good.

Somebody ask who pays for the da's ads, then some reply, look at the anc's spending its bigger.

I would be more worried if the caretaker is corrupt.Who is watching the caretaker?

People who think that it's only the ANC that has corrupt officials are ignorant. Each and every party has corrupt officials, maybe the ANC has more but all parties have "the devil" in them, we are all human right?

If that is right, then that's pretty sad.

OOH! OOH!

Some dirt on the DA!....finally!

This just proves my point from the other thread - http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php?t=167916

Regardless, instead of doing something like taking a typical ANC supporter viewpoint on this and saying either "!@#$^ you, how dare you insult my party, our leader will rule this land until the continents collide!" or "but there's corruption everywhere, this is no different", I say let's wait and see what comes of it. If there's corruption involved, route it out. Personally, I'm inclined to think that this is a desperate last-minute attempt to swing votes from the pool of the morally-intact voterbase.

Agreed. If there's corruption, then the criminals must be brought to justice. I don't care what party it is - they must go to jail.

But these rules don't count for the ANC and that is why we should stop them.

The question should be how the DA deals with this and not "did someone do something wrong". I can understand corruption in parties, I just get annoyed when the people get protected and then get away with it which seems to happen in the ANC. Redeploy someone instead of firing them.

Response from Gareth van Onselen

Dear <name removed>

Of course, if there is corruption of any sort, we will act to end it.

However, no evidence has been presented in either case, and I am certain
none will be, because nothing corrupt has happened.

One cannot act without evidence, and one shouldn't believe the Freedom
Front just because they say something.

You realise that with 48 hours to go until a national election, this is
obviously an attempt to try and discredit the DA and probably has
nothing to do with anything real or tangible.

Agreed.

So far there's only allegations of fraud though. But maybe the ted force or dark forces invaded the DA party :D

For all we know, according to this article, Ismail Petersen could be the councillor's garden boy! How does that give him any capacity, nor does it link him to the DA.

Nope, still nothing, we definitely don't know what Ismail Petersen does, nor who he is (definitely not running for president). We don't even if he exists, this article is very vague, why aren't COPE revealing more details if the know so much?

I will admit this: no party is without corruption, it only takes one individual working alone. The test of a party's mettle is how they deal with such corruption. Do the sweep it under the rug (who could this be?) or do they do what the ID has done and fire them, revoke their membership and press criminal charges?

Interesing that this is happening. A few of the people I know who used to be supporters of the DA have become disgruntled with the DA.

The problem is that Helen Zille is running around electioneering too much and focussing too much and making Cape Town look good as the DA poster city. In the process neglecting lots of important issues and people.

Steps have already been taken by the DA led Midvaal municipality

Seems like the investigation into the alleged corruption started in 2005 already, and yet there are still not evidence available of corruption.
