Panorama ADSL infrastructure

Do Telkom ever ask subscribers if they'd like to trial the new services as part of the conformance tests?

Thanks you've been very helpful ghostR.

They do not test with DSL Customers during conformance testing.

Last year Telkom or DFA or whoever laid fiber all the way to a park 100m from my house. I later found out that it was for a new private clinic. :wtf:

Are you referring to the park on the corner of Alk van Zyl and Hennie Winterbach?

I was in the same boat as you guys until I found Satellite Internet.

There were a few but I went with Amobia because you don't get throttled/shaped to hard.

-If you are willing to spend money on a 20meg line you may be willing to pay R2500 set up fee.
-R800 a month for a 4meg uncapped (10 meg can be done but you have to ask for them and I don't know the costs).
-Tech support is ok.
-call outs happen in 1-3 days.
-Telkom doesn't effect them but Eskom does if powers off so is your inet (but you can phone them and check).
-You can get games prioritized so they are always fast with a phone call.

One major problem you may not have direct line of site to the tower and still not be able to get this.
Best part telkom has nothing to do with this.
Worste Part its not the most reliable inet in the world but i suppose similar to Telkom.

The other option is move and when looking for a house always ask for the home telephone number to check on the telkom website for line speed.

I moved got a 10meg line and am quiet happy. I wouldn't go back to them but they helped me in a time of need.

Yes, that's the one I was referring to. But the area is actually getting upgrades now. There are 3 new sites as mentioned in the thread already.

Thanks, I'm just curious because I'm sure I saw them construct something last year, but there is nothing there - I guess it must have been just cabling then. I'm just down the road from there, so we're practically neighbours then :) Been following these upgrades closely...

I have been using Amobia for a few years now, but recently the quality of the connection has started deteriorating to a point I wouldn't recommend it to anyone anymore.

Wireless technologies are best during the early stages of their life. The higher the uptake by consumers the worst your service is likely to become. I suppose the same logic applies to fix line products. But it's far more noticeable on wireless. You'll definitely be able to switch back to fixed line soon.

I'm in Monte Vista and i'm also "capped" at 2mb line....whilst my folks in Kensington has 10mb speeds.

Morning All, within a few days of making this thread I discovered that Telkom has started the preparations for DSLAM expansion into the Panorama Area. Two concrete slabs have been laid in the last 3 weeks.
1 on Uys Krige Dr./ Hennie Winterbach St.
1 on Seing St./Rachel Bloch Ave (in the Park)

My questions:
1. Does anyone know when the DSLAMs themselves will be installed, and what date we can expect the cut-over?
2. Are Telkom going to offer any trials so that we can test out the new service (so that they can test out)?
3. Are there anymore of these slabs being laid?

Both those DSLAMs have been installed in the meantime, but cutover has still not taken place 6 months later WTF

I spoke to a Telkom technician this morning who was busy working on the new MSAN installed in Sering street - he said he heard the cut-over date to the new system is the second week of March and people in the area can expect speeds of up to 40Mb/s, depending on how close to the new infrastructure they are located. Good news!

Sounds good !

Seems parow north will be stuck on 10mps forever ,just out of the vdsl range and fiber :(

Luckily the LTE speeds are amazing ,very happy with the switch to LTE.

@nbroers, our fight is over. It's taken years to get to this point. I don't know what I'm going to do with all that speed. Very exciting indeed.

I would wait until the chicken has hatched before getting excited!

These ISAMs are being installed in the Panorama zone only. Not sure what the telkom plans are for Welgelegen. There is an ISAM by the circle at panorama primary.

Contractors have set plots for 3 ISAMS in Panorama.

Would it extend to Monte Vista do you think? It's like a kilometer or 2 away.

I'm in Imhoff avenue. Not far at all and I'm in the process of signing up for LTE...
