Paypal coming to SA

Stuff this, FNB here I come!
Nedbank has been screwing me for 20 years + and if they can't link my PPal account its goodby.

Hooray! That's awesome! If PayPal can do it maybe iTunes will follow (way to optimistic I know...)

Ok, does that then mean you have to have a FNB account in order to transfer money to and from paypal account??

I will open up a FNB account if they allow us to receive money via Paypal. There is something I've been waiting to sell since 2007...but no Paypal inflow...

I just want to be able to put money into Paypal with a debit card or EFT so I can buy stuff with it.

Look we don't have much to offer in SA. We don't manufacture much. You could sell gold - or jewellery... We could sell wine.

What a pity that only manufactured goods can be sold via PayPal /sarcasm

We have hundreds of clients selling services and products like ebooks, website themes, embroidery patterns and so on online, all unable to use PayPal at the moment. This could be very good news for them.

Let's hope we aren't faced with these kinds of problems: http://www.aboutpaypal.org/

PayPal will be good for smaller providers who don't want to go through the whole (usually expensive) process of setting up merchant accounts with their banks for payment gateway providers like VCS.

So soon we'll be able to buy stuff from local online stores via Paypal?

If I remember correctly, you've always been able to, although the amounts got deducted from your CC.

@PeterCH - I can accept that people selling material goods probably don't have much use for PP - but for freelance copyrighters and people who do a lot of work online, this is heavensent.

Even if PP does take a cut, and FNB on top of that, I'll still make my bit - services rendered don't have a material value after all - its straight profit - so my only cost is time.

That being said, I do hope the associated costs aren't too high, and that they work with percentages rather than a fixed fee - personally I don't deal with large amounts.

Why FNB?

All my accounts are with ABSA, hope I can also make use of it as I will not be switching banks.
My experience with FNB is that their fees are really much higher than ABSA's

What is curious is what cut will FNB take? PayPal takes a certain cut from each transaction - 5% or more. They probably also charge a deposit fee. Overseas banks don't charge you to keep money in them or they charge little. They just take some of the interest (ie lend your money out). In SA, banks charge for everything. PayPal is too big and the volume of sales in SA too small for PayPal to sacrifice a cut of that for all the extra trouble they will have to go through now with SA scammers and even ordinary customers. Obviously PayPal will take the same cut as they do in America and EU and FNB will take a second cut. What's in it for FNB otherwise?

Well if the service is only for FNB customer's who have already been vetted and fica'd then the risk to paypal is lower. There will obviously be a cut for FNB, how that will be structured remains to be seen. ( Could also possibly be a service for certain account types - silver cheque etc, or accounts with an operating history in excess of six months)

For everyone asking why paypal is such a big deal ? E-bay.

When I had a operational paypal account I used to make $ and alot of them with ebay/paypal. When the RMB told paypal to vacate, then my account was frozen and I can tell you even with other (more complicated) payment options I have never been able to achieve the amount of sales I used to.

Ebay and Paypal are the ultimate combination for certain niche markets. (Aimed at younger users without credit cards)

So you're saying that other countries eg Australia with 20+ million richer ppl etc does not have such things. Are you saying we have something unique here - that our backward internet society can design pages better than countries which have higher GDP and internet penetration?

If you're contemplating PayPal for business, you are a Mickey Mouse business. Sorry.

can someone please explain the relevance off this???? why the hell should a customer care what the commission is? the buyer get protection but obviously he pays for it...the seller gets protection but he is oblivious to the costs...

why do people always want to get into the financials? not why but why speculate about something that they will never make public???????

Mine are also at blapsa on their Platinum package.
Been checking out FNB's website and looks like I can get similar for about R20 less.
Moving the homeloan I'm not sure about.

Their ONE account they have had issues with in the past, that put me off them. Also an expensive account to have.

This is great news, we have been waiting for this for a very long time and it will be a step in the right direction for the ecommerce industry for SA.

Loving it.

Nice on FNB!

If it was Absa or Std Bank then people will be moaning...why Absa!

I've experienced excellent customer service in ABSA branches, plus the consultants speak my language.
I remember the days where I had to stand in extremely long queues in the FNB branch, and the other day when I went to an FNB who had only one person at the tellers with a queue that was already out the door.

But I understand why FNB is doing this. They want to empower their client base, which consists mainly out of the lower-income group of people.

Yes!!!! I can't wait!!!!!!

I'm busy with a couple of eCommerce websites and all of them has got the PayPal feature already built in. At the moment you have to struggle to get Joomla and Wordpress working with other payment companies like PayGate etc.

I also want Google checkout to come to SA!
