I enquired about vdsl and got the following reply:

your line exceeds the 1.6km loop length to attain 20mbps so your specific DP (Distribution Point) does not qualify unfortunately

im assuming the loop is from the exchange to me and then back again. how close do I need to be for 20mps? does everybody have line of sight of their exchanges for 20mbps?

and the Telkom checker says im stuck on 4mbps but could I then get 10mpbs if they decide to upgrade? the box is around the corner from me. im not sure its a 1.6km round trip. but there is a bigger one further away.

edit - ill add stuff from my searches here:

ADSL line rate reach

this article includes a link to a calculator that uses your SNR and attenuation to get your 'best scenario' line speed

dslam - http://www.techterms.com/definition/dslam

1.6KM copper length from the exchange is pretty decent and I am very sure you could get at least 10Mbit stable, probably more I'd imagine.

My Copper length is 1.1KM, actual walking distance is like 600 - 800 meters perhaps? The Telkom tech said I should be able to sync at over 30Mbit on VDSL. -shrugs-

around the corner is an old grey box. I thought I was plugged into that one. I must go look for the other one. so 1km and less loop length is ideal for vdsl?

the big exchange in the area is 20mbps capable. is that dslam or UMC?

That is adsl. I am in the same position as you, the main exchange is being upgraded to 40mbps and im stuck just outside the area. If I would move 1km in any direction I would have 40/100mbps available.

In the exchanges they have DSLAMs and now the new MSAN/ISAM (different manufactures)if they have been upgraded.
You should get 10 meg or more if you are only 1,6 KM from the exchange .

To expand a bit.

They are replacing the DSLAMs with MSAN/ISAMs as well. Once the entire exchange has been cutover then all the DSLAMs are switched off and recovered.

The customers closest to the old exchanges will be fed off a MSAN/ISAM that is situated inside the exchange building.

should have enough for 10mbps:

DSL Maximum Speed Calculator
