Hi guys,

I applied for a phone line at my house ages ago. However, I got this last week to my e-mail:

Dear Telkom Customer
In the past you applied for Telkom Home Line,
The good news is that we may now provide you with Wire-less Home Telephone in your area. If you are still interested reply with your email address to [email protected] or sms or call 0813914662. We'll send you information about the products and specials. We promise to exceed your service expectation.

What do you guys recon? Scam or not? I would be very interested in getting Telkom Wimax as they said there's no plans of installing lines in the near future in my area... I'm assuming "Wire-less Home Telephone" means Wimax?

What is the area code 013 for?

They offer a wireless service where there are no lines. It's not WiMax, not sure what technology it uses but a friend of mine had it, it's kuk.

Guess it will depend on your signal and usage though.

Ok, so I sent a mail after confirming with a buddy at Telkom that the number and person is legit. I got an e-mail back with these attachments (uploaded to my DropBox public folder for sharing): http://dl.dropbox.com/u/10944209/fwdtelkomwirelessline.zip

In short: Telkom "fixed 3G" connection. Either a phone or a router.

CLOSER 1 – R158 per month
CLOSER 2 – R177 per month
CLOSER 3 – R333 per month

With various amounts of free minutes included (and no data).

Post-paid data:
Post paid data (Data volume include per month)

Do on the move 500MB R 149.00
Do on the move 1GB R 219.00
2GB R349.00
3GB R489.00
10GB R1499.00

Fineprint: Telkom 3G fixed mobile services do not support soft cell handover.

So basically I'm paying for a glorified landline with Telkom lock in (no 3rd party ISPs) which costs 7.5 times more expensive than Telkom's own 8ta 10GB package?

No thanks!! Telkom, get with the time!

I got an email like that a few months ago. I'm glad I waited the extra month and a half to get my telephone line and ADSL installed.
Sounds like I would been schnaaid..
The reason I applied for an ADSL line was for low latency... can't freakn work from home on a k@k ping.
I blasted the dumbass for even thinking I would consider something so pathetic.
