Hi All

So i have a macbook running on 10.4.11 and i use a 500gb HDD external that i copy movies and music to from the mac. however i bought a new iMac running 10.5.7 and when i try to copy anything to it, it says i can't. i went to the sharing option under system preferences and added the external, when i try to add myself i have read privileges only. but i am the only user so i should have admin access.

can anyone help, is there a fix, does 10.5.8 solve this...?

If that's not the case you can give yourself read/write privileges using "get info".

if the drive is formatted as NTFS you will need an app called NTFS for OSx

you can download it at:

http://macntfs-3g.blogspot.com/

If you can read on one Mac and not the other, I dont think its likely that the HDD is in NTFS format. And it's also not likely because of the OSX version.

Have you control clicked the HDD icon to see it's Permissions? You may only need to untick/tick the Read-Write Box.

Reformatting the HDD is another option.

thanks for all the advice, i used the ntfs-3g app, worked liked a charm.
i mkfs.ntfs to format the HDD to ntfs, it was new, then the app made everything else possible :)
